Bible Verse of The Day – 2-7-20

Philippians 2:14 (NKJV) 14 Do all things without complaining and disputing,

Complaining: grumbling, whining, lamenting, griping, moaning, railing, etc.

It’s easy sometimes to fall into complaining if we’re not careful to watch our words. This is especially true if we are ungrateful or unthankful for what we have.

For children of God, if we are chronic complainers, our complaints ultimately reflect our attitude toward what God has given us or done for us.

The Greek word used for “complaining” refers to an emotional rejection of God’s providence.

We may not direct our complaints toward God intentionally or even knowingly, but our dissatisfaction with our lives is really a direct insult toward the One who made us and Who provides for us.

Disputing: arguing, criticizing, questioning, quarreling, etc.

People who complain a lot will often also argue about many things. It’s another way for them to express their dissatisfaction with their life in general.

This happens when we lose sight of whatever is good and we focus more on what we perceive to be bad or negative.

The actual Greek word used for “disputing” in this verse refers to something more intellectual than emotional. And it indicates questionings and criticisms that are negatively directed toward God.

As we can see, constantly complaining and disputing aren’t something good, especially for believers.

Sometimes we might not even realize that we have fallen into this kind of behavior, and we need a gentle tap on the shoulder to remind us to be thankful and grateful, no matter what our situation looks like.

Bible Verse of The Day – 1-6-18

Philippians 2:14 (NKJV) 14 Do all things without complaining and disputing

Ouch. This one can speak volumes to most of us.

Complaining can become a very bad habit for us if we’re not careful. Some of us complain purposely. Others might complain without even realizing that they’ve fallen into it.

Complaining is something that shows us our heart. What do we mean by that? Let’s take a look.

If we complain habitually, it’s usually because we are ungrateful for what we have. Sometimes we might complain because we’re envious or jealous of others. We might think that others have it better than we do. And doing this can cause us to be in a constant state of grumbling.

God wants us to learn to be content. This means that we need to stop longing for the things that others have.

Philippians 4:11 (NKJV) 11 Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content:

Always wanting what others have is called coveting. God has warned us against coveting what others have. And there’s a good reason for that. Covetousness is destructive to our thinking.

It’s important that we learn to be thankful and appreciative for everything God blesses us with. To do this, we need to take the time to look at what we have, instead of worrying about what we don’t have.

This comes when we draw near to God and learn to love Him more deeply.

On a personal note, I used to tend to grumble about many things. Because my personality tended to be critical of things that I saw, it led to always looking at the bad side of things.

God has now taught me to appreciate what I have. He has taught me to be thankful and content, whether we are in a season of feast or a season of famine. It took some work, but because I allowed God to help me and show me where I needed to fix some things, He was able to deliver me from it! Amen

So, please take this to heart today. Listen to the soft, gentle voice of God. And let Him help us to recognize our complaining and replace it with testimonies of His goodness.

Psalm 119:36 (NKJV) 36 Incline my heart to Your testimonies, And not to covetousness.

Bible Verse of The Day – 4-14-17

Exodus 16:2 (NKJV) 2 Then the whole congregation of the children of Israel complained against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness.

Have you ever read about the Israelites and wondered how in the world they could grumble and complain, while God was feeding them and providing for their every need supernaturally?

Seriously. God was dropping manna from heaven while they slept. They had water when they needed it. They lacked absolutely nothing. Yet they found reasons to complain, despite seeing miracles literally every day.

There’s no way you and I would do that! Or would we?

Do we find ourselves grumbling about what we lack? Do we complain about what we have, even though God was the One who provided it for us?

I think if we look a bit more closely at ourselves, we will find that we are not all that different than the Israelites were back in the desert.

Maybe it’s time for us to do a self check and let God show us where we are complaining, when we should be rejoicing and giving thanks.

Bible Verse of The Day – 10-12-16

Philippians 2:14-15 (NKJV) 14 Do all things without complaining and disputing, 15 that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world…

Complainers. Grumblers. Fault finders.

We all know one (or more) of them. Maybe we are one of them.

As a follower of Christ, perpetual complaining isn’t something we should be engaging in. If we are, it’s usually an indication of a problem with the way we look at things or a problem with our walk with God.

The book of Jude (Jude 1:14-16) groups complainers and grumblers in together with the ungodly. So if we’re a believer and we’re a complainer or grumbler, we’re in need of some help!

The verses above tell us that we are to become blameless and harmless, without fault and we are to be beacons of light in a dark world. But if we’re complaining, we are spreading darkness, not light.

I remember many years ago, I used to work in a factory with a guy who complained a lot. And I mean a LOT! I liked him. He was a really good guy, but his complaining got to me sometimes. Being around him made you feel terrible after a while.

I got tired of hearing it and wished he would say something good. Many times I would try to steer the conversation to things that were more positive. I did my best to try to bring light into the conversations, instead of letting darkness have dominion.

And so should we be like this every day, speaking words that encourage and inspire people. Words that show people the good things in life and in the world. And words that shine God’s light where it is so badly needed.

Let’s let God show us how to be blameless, faultless and shining lights into a dark generation.

Bible Verse of The Day – 2-6-16

Philippians 2:14-15 (NKJV) 14 Do all things without complaining and disputing, 15 that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world…

There’s no doubt that we live in a crooked world, where good seems to be overtaken by evil.

People look to take care of themselves and push the needs of others to the side in an effort to make sure they get what they want. And they complain so much!

Complaining seems to be a popular thing to do these days. People will complain about just about anything. And if we’re not careful we can get caught up in it and follow them right down the same crooked path.

Don’t do it!

As children of God, followers of Christ, we can’t allow ourselves to fall into the trap of becoming complainers. It can happen easily, and the next thing we know, we catch ourselves sounding just like everyone else.

Here’s what God’s word says about it.

Jude 1:16 (NKJV) 16 These are grumblers, complainers, walking according to their own lusts; and they mouth great swelling words, flattering people to gain advantage.

And here’s what He tells us to do instead!

Philippians 4:8 (NKJV) 8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

And that will cure our complaining problem!
