James 1:22 (NKJV) 22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

What, exactly, is a doer of the word?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Most people instantly think of actions related to acts of kindness, or maybe actions related to \u201cmissions\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

But what was James\u00a0really<\/em>\u00a0talking about? Let\u2019s dig in and see!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

First, James was referring to \u201cbeing doers\u201d of the word.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

This tells us that \u201cbeing a doer\u201d is more than just an action or an act. When we \u201cbecome a doer<\/em>\u201d, it means that we have taken on the\u00a0attribute<\/em>\u00a0of doing as\u00a0part of who we are<\/em>, not just simply acting something out.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Let me explain further.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

We can do something. That does not make us \u201ca doer\u201d. It just makes us an actor, so to speak. We feel an impulse and act on it. It is an action that isn\u2019t necessarily tied to who we are.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

When we \u201cdo\u201d as James refers to \u201cdoing\u201d, we become a \u201cdoer\u201d because we are now going beyond a simple act of carrying out something that we think is good. We are \u201cbeing a doer\u201d because it is part of us. It is no longer just something we feel obligated to carry out or act upon.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

If we do something simply because it seems right or feels good, and we believe that we are\u00a0truly<\/em>\u00a0a doer in the sense that James teaches about, we are only fooling ourselves.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

It comes down to the condition and the state of our heart.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

And this will play out in our lives on a daily basis, one way or the other. We will simply do, or we will\u00a0be a doer<\/em>. One or the other.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Which one will we choose to be?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
