James 4:6 (NKJV) 6 But He gives more grace.\u00a0Therefore\u00a0He says: \u201cGod resists the proud,\u00a0But\u00a0gives grace to the humble.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

As I was doing some various things today, the Holy Spirit dropped a short phrase into my spirit; He opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

I quickly texted it to myself so I wouldn\u2019t\u00a0forget it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

I knew it was a piece of scripture, but I wanted to dig into it a bit and learn more about what it really means.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

So, as I sat down to begin researching, I found that there are actually a few references to this principle throughout scripture.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The verse above states that\u00a0\u201cGod resists the proud,\u00a0But\u00a0gives grace to the humble\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Note the quotation\u00a0marks, indicating that it came from another\u00a0scripture.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Then, that same phrase is quoted again in 1 Peter 5:5.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Digging further showed that it came from Proverbs 3:34. The wording in Proverbs was slightly different, but with the same intent.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Proverbs 3:34 (NKJV) 34 Surely He scorns the scornful, But gives grace to the humble.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The original text here uses stronger language, by replacing \u201cproud\u201d with \u201cscornful\u201d. It also states that God \u201cscorns\u201d these types of people, instead of saying that He \u201copposes\u201d them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

So, what does that mean?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

First, as you would assume, the targets of this are prideful people; arrogant people who look down at others or hold themselves in higher esteem than they should.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

James uses it when referring to worldly behavior in believers, warning that anyone who is a friend of the world is an enemy of God.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Peter uses it while promoting submissiveness to elders and to each other (within the body of Christ), while also encouraging believers to be \u201cclothed with humility\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Lastly, let’s look at\u00a0the original, in Proverbs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Interestingly, the writer says that God \u201cscorns the scornful\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

This literally means that God looks at the scornful (wicked, oppressor) in the same way that they look at others; with disdain and contempt (worthless, despicable, beneath consideration, unworthy of respect).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Those are pretty powerful words by anyone\u2019s standards.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

But what do we see when it comes to the humble?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

God gives them grace, treating them with honor, dignity and distinction, showing them His love and kindness.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

This makes it plain that humility is pleasing to God, while pride is not.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Let\u2019s ask God to show us if we are prideful anywhere in our lives. And then let\u2019s allow Him to root it out of us, making us humble in every way, so our lives are pleasing to Him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
