1 Corinthians 6:12 (NKJV) 12 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.<\/p>\n

This is such a powerful verse that we can all learn a lot from.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s take a look to see what it means for us as followers of Christ.<\/p>\n

All things are lawful for me.<\/p>\n

First, we need to know that this verse can be a bit confusing if we look at it only on the surface. So, let\u2019s look below<\/em> the surface.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s important to understand that Paul is addressing the Corinthian believers regarding various shortcomings within this group that had been brought to his attention.<\/p>\n

They mistakenly believed that, because they were no longer bound to the Mosaic Law, they were free to do whatever pleased them.<\/p>\n

In the verses surrounding verse 12,\u00a0Paul\u00a0is instructing them that this isn\u2019t the case, and that what they subject themselves to may well be what they end up bound (enslaved) to.<\/p>\n

Paul warns them that although \u201call things may be lawful\u201d, they may not be helpful (beneficial or profitable).<\/p>\n

\u201cAll things are lawful for me\u201d was a saying that the Corinthians had coined to justify their immoral habits and behaviors.<\/p>\n

Paul quotes this phrase as he addresses them, knowing that using their own phrases will catch their attention.<\/p>\n

Additionally, he tells them that he \u201cwill not be brought under the power of any\u201d (anything).<\/p>\n

What\u2019s he really saying?<\/p>\n

He\u2019s saying that the only power he will subject himself to is the power of the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n

His insinuation is that by subjecting himself to the power and leading of the Holy Spirit, he will not fall subject to (slave to) the power of sin.<\/p>\n

So, let us remember that although Jesus died for our sins, offering us forgiveness, and although God shows us His mercy and grace, we should not entangle ourselves in, or subject ourselves to, those things that will ultimately enslave us.<\/p>\n
