Deuteronomy 5:32-33 (NKJV) 32 \u201cTherefore you shall be careful to do as the Lord your God has commanded you; you shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.<\/p>\n

If you were to read through Deuteronomy, you would see that there are a lot of commandments, rules and laws laid down for the people to live by.<\/p>\n

Initially, you might get overwhelmed by all these laws, rules and commandments. And you may wonder how anyone could possibly follow them all.<\/p>\n

You may also wonder why God would create all these laws, rules and commandments.<\/p>\n

I mean, doesn\u2019t it seem kind of legalistic and stiff?<\/p>\n

But as you spend more time in the word, and you allow the Holy Spirit to show you the hows and whys of what God did, you will begin to see a couple of things very clearly.<\/p>\n

First, you will see that God had to do this in order to rein in the people of Israel, for they were a stiff-necked, stubborn people.<\/p>\n

Exodus 32:9 (NKJV) 9 And the Lord said to Moses, \u201cI have seen this people, and indeed it is a stiff-necked people!<\/p>\n

But more importantly, God was trying to show the people how He wanted them to live, not by rituals and repetitions, but in their hearts.<\/p>\n

God desired the people of Israel to love Him enough to want to please Him. He wanted their hearts to long for Him and love Him for who He was, not just for what He had done for them.<\/p>\n

But because He knew them, He had to put these rules, laws and commandments in place to give them \u201cguideposts\u201d to stay within.<\/p>\n

The Israelites were prone to idolatry, repeatedly pushing God aside and going after \u201cother gods\u201d.<\/p>\n

But God promised them that if they followed everything He asked of them, He would bless them, and they would prosper.<\/p>\n

Deuteronomy 5:33 (NKJV) 33 You shall walk in all the ways which the Lord your God has commanded you, that you may live and that it may be well with you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which you shall possess.<\/p>\n

Today, we live under grace, not under the law. But God\u2019s desire for us is still the same; that we love Him with our whole heart, not just going through the motions with routines and rituals.<\/p>\n
