Hebrews 12:28-29 (NKJV) 28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. 29 For our God is a consuming fire.<\/p>\n

Fear God.<\/p>\n

How often do we hear people speak about this in a way that doesn\u2019t water it down?<\/p>\n

A few years ago, I had shared one of our devotionals on Facebook. That devotional touched on the topic of fearing God.<\/p>\n

Someone I knew said he enjoyed the devotional, but he thought that the words, \u201cfearing God\u201d, should have been replaced with the words, \u201cloving God\u201d.<\/p>\n

And his comment proved my point that very few people truly comprehend how important it is that we understand what the Bible means when it says we are to fear God.<\/p>\n

Fearing God doesn\u2019t mean that we walk around afraid that God is going to strike us down at any given moment.<\/p>\n

The Bible calls us to walk in a reverent fear of our Creator, understanding His sovereignty and His power.<\/p>\n

Verse 28, above, says that we should \u201cserve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear\u201d.<\/p>\n

Then, verse 29 goes on to say that \u201cour God is a consuming fire\u201d.<\/p>\n

There are many verses throughout the word of God that mention \u201cthe terror of God\u201d, or \u201cthe terror of the Lord\u201d.<\/p>\n

This sounds more like genuine fear than mushy love.<\/p>\n

You see, we are<\/em> to love God. But that love should not replace our fear (absolute reverence) of Him.<\/p>\n

For when we lose our fear of Him and begin treating Him with less reverence and respect than He is due, we are surely not looking at Him for who He really is.<\/p>\n

And that is a path that leads to disaster.<\/p>\n

Let us serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. For our God is a consuming fire.<\/p>\n
