1 Timothy 6:11 (NKJV) 11 But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness.<\/p>\n

As most of us have already heard many times, God’s word is a handbook for life.<\/p>\n

It will teach us who God is, who He wants us to be, and how to live our lives.<\/p>\n

It will teach us to love others, to forgive those who have wronged us, and to give God preference in everything we do.<\/p>\n

It will also teach us about the things that we should avoid.<\/p>\n

Sometimes our flesh wrestles with us about such things, trying desperately to hold onto our old selves and our old habits.<\/p>\n

With that said, let us look at what Paul was sharing with Timothy in the verses immediately prior to this one!<\/p>\n

While many in the world spend their time chasing wealth with a passion exhibited in few other pursuits, Paul proclaims that we gain much more than financial status when our godliness is accompanied by contentment.<\/p>\n

1 Timothy 6:6 (LSB) 6 But godliness actually is a means of great gain, when accompanied by contentment.<\/p>\n

So, our passion should be for what pleases God, not for what elevates us in the world\u2019s eyes.<\/p>\n

And as Paul proceeded (verses 7-8), he also reminded Timothy that we brought nothing into the world, and we will surely not take anything with us when we exit this world. Therefore, if we have food and clothing, let us be satisfied (content).<\/p>\n

Finally, he warned Timothy (verses 9-10) that those whose desire is to be rich are increasingly likely to fall into temptation and harmful lusts which drown men and plunge them into ruin and destruction.<\/p>\n

Let us learn to be content, trusting God and putting our hope and our efforts solely in our pursuit of, and our relationship with, the One who is worthy of our efforts and our passion.<\/p>\n
