Matthew 16:23 (NKJV) 23 But He turned and said to Peter, \u201cGet behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men<\/span>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jesus rarely rebuked anyone harshly, so when we see that He did<\/i>, we should pay attention to what prompted Him to do so.<\/p>\n

The fact that the rebuke above was directed at one of His disciples means we need to pay even closer attention.<\/p>\n

If we were to look at the ministry of Jesus, we would see that most of His harshest rebukes were directed at the religious leaders of His day.<\/p>\n

In the situation above, we find that Jesus had asked the disciples who people were saying He was.<\/p>\n

In their replies, they told Him the many different things people had said.<\/p>\n

But Jesus then asked them, \u201cwho do you <\/i>say that I am?\u201d.<\/p>\n

Peter immediately replied, \u201cYou are the Christ, the Son of the living God\u201d.<\/p>\n

Jesus replied to Peter, proclaiming that this understanding was not revealed to him by flesh and blood, but by \u201cMy Father who is in heaven.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jesus commended Peter and told him that it was upon this truth that He would build His church.<\/p>\n

It appeared that Peter had hit a homerun with this new level of insight!<\/p>\n

Shortly after, however, Jesus began explaining to His disciples that He must suffer, be killed and then raised on the third day.<\/p>\n

At hearing this, Peter took Jesus aside and sharply rebuked Him, stating \u201cthis shall not happen to you!\u201d<\/p>\n

And those words caused Jesus to turn to Peter and say, \u201cget behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me.\u201d<\/p>\n

As children of God, you and I should want to fully understand why this happened. Why did Jesus rebuke Peter and imply that these were the words of Satan?<\/p>\n

It was because Peter was speaking from his human understanding, not by Holy Spirit-led understanding.<\/p>\n

This shows us the importance of learning to walk by the Spirit of God instead of always leaning on our own understanding.<\/p>\n

We too must learn to forego conventional thinking and learn to be led by God’s Spirit, even when our thoughts seem rational and logical.<\/p>\n

Remember that God\u2019s ways are higher than our ways, and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts (Isaiah 55:9).<\/p>\n

And it is when we learn to think and live by His Spirit that we are pleasing Him.<\/p>\n
