John 8:31 (LSB) 31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, \u201cIf you abide in My word, then you are truly My disciples<\/span>;<\/p>\n

There is a very important message in this verse that we need to be sure doesn\u2019t get ignored or overlooked.<\/p>\n

The importance of it may be easily missed if we aren\u2019t diligent in discerning the word by the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n

We are all very likely familiar with the verse that follows this one, John 8:32, in which Jesus states that we shall know the truth, and the truth shall make us free.<\/p>\n

But it is important to note that verse 32 begins with \u201cand\u201d, which should always lead us to see what the \u201cand\u201d is referring to.<\/p>\n

In this case, Jesus had stated that we are truly His disciples if we abide in His word.<\/p>\n

What did He mean? And what does it mean to abide in His word?<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s address the word \u201cabide\u201d first, since the rest of the verse hinges on that stipulation.<\/p>\n

The Greek word for \u201cabide\u201d is meno, which implies or emphasizes permanence and endurance, surrendering our life wholly to Him; every aspect of it.<\/p>\n

This does not mean we are expected to be perfect. It simply means never forsaking Him. We endure, and we persevere regardless of what we face or how many times we may fail.<\/p>\n

Perseverance does not mean perfection. It means having the willingness and fortitude to stay the course, even when that course may be very hard.<\/p>\n

It also means being willing to die to self, as Jesus mentioned in Luke 9:23.<\/p>\n

And as we study God\u2019s word, we will see that this is a common thread that is taught by Jesus, Paul, James, and others, as they wrote that we must endure to the end, running the race in such a way that we may obtain the prize (eternal life in God\u2019s presence).<\/p>\n

No, we do not endure or persevere to earn eternal life.<\/p>\n

But our perseverance is living proof of our stated or confessed faith in Him.<\/p>\n

James 1:12 (LSB) 12 Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.<\/p>\n
