Numbers 20:7-8 (NKJV) 7 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 8 \u201cTake the rod; you and your brother Aaron gather the congregation together. Speak to the rock before their eyes, and it will yield its water;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Moses was under intense pressure from the Israelites to provide them with water. The people were angry for being led into the wilderness, and they were now thirsty, as were their animals.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

So, Moses and Aaron left the people and fell on their faces at the door of the tabernacle, seeking God and asking Him to help them in their situation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

God, in His faithfulness, appeared to them and instructed Moses to pick up his staff, go to the people and bring them to a rock. At that rock, Moses was instructed to speak to the rock, and water would flow out of it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

So Moses gathered the people and went to the rock, as God had told him to do.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

But here\u2019s where Moses got himself into trouble. Instead of speaking to the rock and bringing honor to God, he raised his staff and struck the rock, twice. Despite the error on the part of Moses, God caused water to flow from the rock.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Numbers 20:11 (NKJV) 11 Then Moses lifted his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod; and water came out abundantly, and the congregation and their animals drank.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

But God held Moses accountable for his disobedience, and there was a price to pay for it. Neither he nor Aaron would enter into the land of promise.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Numbers 20:12 (NKJV) 12 Then the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, \u201cBecause you did not believe Me, to hallow Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

It\u2019s critical that we not get hung up on how God has done something for us in the past and try to force Him to do it the same way next time around. God is very specific in His instructions to us, and He wants us to follow them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

We may not always understand why <\/em>He wants this, but it\u2019s very important, nonetheless, that we do what <\/em>He wants, the way <\/em>He wants it done. Not doing so can be costly for us in many different ways.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Several years ago, we heard God tell us something. We thought that it couldn\u2019t possibly be God telling us this thing. It just didn\u2019t make sense. So, we didn’t do what we thought we heard.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

We found out later on that not doing so had cost us a lot of money. God helped us overcome it, in only the way that God can. But it was still very costly for us.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Obedience is always best.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
