James 1:2\u00a0(NKJV)\u00a026 If anyone\u00a0among you thinks he is\u00a0religious, and\u00a0does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one\u2019s religion is useless.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The word “think” in this\u00a0verse is very important!<\/p>\n

We think we are religious, but then we open our mouth\u00a0every time\u00a0we feel like it. We have no restraint on our lips, so we say\u00a0what we please, when we please.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

James is simply stating that we need to be careful what we say. We can’t just say what we think all the time and have no control over what comes out of our mouth.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

We’re told that we need to bridle our tongue. But what does that mean?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

A bridle is a headgear that a horse\u00a0wears\u00a0and is\u00a0governed\u00a0by. To bridle something means\u00a0to restrain it, to have control over it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

We have to take full responsibility for our words. We need to govern or restrain our tongue, so that we just don’t say what we feel. Don’t allow it to get us caught up in gossip, trash talking, vulgarity or negative talk. We need to be slow to speak and quick to listen.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

James 1:19 (NKJV) 19 So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath…<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Have we ever said\u00a0something, and then later\u00a0on said, “oh boy, I wish I had never said\u00a0that.”?<\/p>\n

We can’t take back our words once they are said. Words are powerful and can do a lot of damage, or they\u00a0can do a lot of good!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Proverbs 15:4 (NKJV) 4 A wholesome tongue is a tree of life,\u00a0But\u00a0perverseness in it breaks the spirit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Let’s be careful what comes out of our mouths. We don’t want to cause destruction with our words. We want to be edifying, uplifting and encouraging with our words.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
