Luke 3:17 (LSB) 17 His winnowing fork is in His hand to thoroughly clear His threshing floor and to gather the wheat into His barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
Living in this particular season in history, we are witnessing things that many of us would never have imagined we would see or be a part of.
Some may immediately think of modern social happenings when this is mentioned; the dramatic increase in evil, the blatant and very conspicuous sin we witness, the historic events happening around the globe.
But there is one thing that we often don’t think of immediately; the rise of what some might call “modern Christianity”.
Modern Christianity is what we are witnessing on a very large scale across the globe, and especially in western nations.
Many of us have accepted this modern Christianity without realizing it. We were drawn in a little at a time.
This is not to say that modern Christianity is inherently bad or blatantly wrong.
But a large part of what we see today is very far from Biblically sound.
Saying this may stir a hornet’s nest, so to speak. But we sometimes need to be shaken a bit to wake us up and cause us to look around. And if it requires that we “get stung” by a hornet, then let us learn from it.
One of the hallmarks of “modern Christianity” is the emotionalism that accompanies it.
How do we know if we are involved in this modern Christianity? Here are some things to watch for in our lives and in the services that we attend.
Does a large percentage of our walk with God hinge on how we feel, or on what God does for us, instead of us living to serve Him and others?
Do we spend our days seeking what we want, always looking to God for abundant blessings of one kind or another?
Is our walk with God more about ourselves than about Him?
Do we rely on the “worship team” to lead us into His presence? Do we struggle to find God’s presence outside of the church building?
Do we live like the world while professing to be a child of God and a follower of Christ?
These are things we need to consider. They are not a finger pointing at anyone. Nor are these words of accusation being hurled at a denomination or organization.
They are REAL questions requiring REAL answers.
And those answers need to be sought HONESTLY, examining our heart with all sincerity under the guidance and conviction of the Holy Spirit, that the chaff may be burned away, revealing the truth about what hides there and what drives our relationship with God 🙏
