Category: Drawing Closer to God

Bible Verse of The Day – 3-26-19

Matthew 5:6 (NKJV) 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.

Hunger means to have a strong desire or to crave something.

Some people may think that signing up for every program at church is going to fill that hunger and quench that thirst. Although it is good to be involved in classes and similar things, we also need to make sure we are getting that one-on-one time with God. That includes being quiet and just listening for Him.

To get such quietness we need to lessen our load, slow down and cut off those things that are causing us to be too busy for anything else.

Hungering after God means that within our hearts we are craving and desiring more of Him. But it is hard to get that fulfillment if we are busy with everything else.

Sometimes the things we do to try to find God get us so busy that we actually lose touch with Him. We have to discern and know when to pull away and rest in His presence. He alone will satisfy our hunger.

So, remember, programs are Good. But God is the only One who will truly satisfy!

Psalm 46:10 (NKJV) 10 Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!

Bible Verse of The Day – 12-8-18

Matthew 5:6 (NKJV) 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.

As human beings, we can experience two kinds of hunger. One is our hunger for natural food; the things we eat that keep our body alive.

And then there is spiritual food; the things we “eat” that keep our spirit alive and thriving.

It’s safe to say that we all very much understand natural hunger. Our bodies tell us when we need to eat. Our stomachs rumble. We feel empty. And if we don’t eat enough, we can become faint and light-headed. If we don’t provide our bodies with proper nutrition, we can actually pass out.

In extreme circumstances, we can become physically sick, and ultimately die from starvation.

The same can be said for spiritual hunger. We feel the longing inside of us to be fed. Our spirit craves proper food and sustenance. And if we don’t feed our spirit properly, it will wither up and die. It will starve to death.

Many of us feel this hunger, this longing, and we try to fill it with the wrong things; material things, wealth, attention from others, physical affection and many other things.

But none of these will ever satisfy our spiritual hunger. And that’s because we fail to truly understand what this hunger really is. It’s a desire to draw closer to God and let Him satisfy us.

No, this isn’t about a God-shaped hole that we hear so much about when referring to our need for a Savior.

It’s about hungering and thirsting after righteousness. It’s about longing to know God in such an intimate way that nothing else will stop the craving. Nothing else will satisfy our hunger and our thirst.

Hungering and thirsting after righteousness will push us toward God in a way that is beyond words to describe it. And when we finally understand the hunger, and we begin to feast on God and His word, then and only then will we be filled.

Are we hungry and thirsty? Do we feel like we’re spiritually starving and undernourished?

We need to press into God. Draw near to Him. Let Him be the sole source of our sustenance.

James 4:8 (NKJV) 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

Bible Verse of The Day – 1-4-18

Psalm 37:4-5 (NKJV) 4 Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart. 5 Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass.

Delight yourself in the Lord. Commit your way to the Lord. Notice a common theme in those two phrases?

We all want God to give us the desires of our heart. Who wouldn’t? We’d be crazy not to want that!

But let’s take a look at what it takes for that to happen in our lives.

First, we have to “delight ourselves in the Lord”. This is a big deal, especially since it’s one of the keys to having God give us the desires of our heart.

To delight ourselves in the Lord means that we put Him first. We make His priorities ours. We make His thoughts our thoughts. We make His ways our ways. And so on.

It means that we give ourselves to Him wholeheartedly. 100%. We make every effort to please Him and grow our relationship with Him.

The beginning of verse 5 sums it up nicely: “Commit your way to the Lord”.

To commit means to give in trust, or to give charge over.

We trust God with our life and give Him charge over it. Pretty serious stuff, isn’t it?

So, with that in mind, it sheds new light on what it takes for God to give us the desires of our heart.

Is this meant to discourage us? Not at all. Quite opposite, actually.

Now that the mystery has been removed, we should have less doubts about this and what it takes for it to happen in our own lives. This should encourage us to move forward with God in every area of our lives.

Go ahead. Draw near to God. Press in to Him and learn of Him. He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him!

Bible Verse of The Day – 8-14-17

Psalm 73:28 (NKJV) 28 But it is good for me to draw near to God; I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, That I may declare all Your works.

God wants us to get personal with Him!

He wants us to draw near to Him and learn of Him. He wants us to press in to Him and build that one-on-one relationship with Him and take it to new heights. He wants to walk hand in hand with us!

He wants us to make our needs known to Him and trust Him with them, to supply us with what we need.

As believers, most of us are guilty, at one time or another, of bringing our needs to our pastors, our friends, our family and others. And sometimes we might even pray and ask God for help.

But then we just leave it there and never wait or listen to see what God wants us to do next. For some reason we think that once we bring it to God (or whoever else), that we can just forget about it and move on to other things. We rarely consider the fact that God may require us to take steps in order to bring the victory we’re asking for.

God is faithful to show us what we need to do. Sometimes we won’t need to do anything. But, more often than not, God will give us steps to take to carry out His plan. We need to be diligent to listen and then obey and follow His leading.

Living by faith is exciting! We can learn to live in anticipation of what God will do for us next. And we will never look back. We will never miss the days when we wished we could have the faith to see God move.

Now we can see Him move on our behalf each and every day, knowing that He is faithful and that His promises are true. And our lives will never be the same again.

Trust Him. Draw near to Him. Press in to Him. And watch your faith grow like never before.

Bible Verse of The Day – 2-13-17

James 4:8 (NKJV) 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

Churches around the world are struggling, but it doesn’t have to be this way. God is willing to help. He wants to move and do mighty things within His Bride. But are we willing to let Him?

Every church we go into has the same ole, same ole routine. It seems like the same song and dance over and over again. Give me a church that doesn’t have that same ole routine and “THERE” we will find God!

It doesn’t’ have to be a big church, a fancy church or even a church building at all. It doesn’t have to be a place full of people. It can be just a few.

It doesn’t have to be a place with a loud preacher, pastor, evangelist, or priest. Nope! It can be the quietest place around. It doesn’t have to be where there are high tech lights and great music. God doesn’t need lights, music or fancy talk to get Him moving.

We’ve got to understand that our God is bigger than our thinking and He can not and will not bow to us and what we conjure up.

He says “draw near to Me” and He will what? He will “draw near to you”. When God gets near us, we are going to KNOW it!

So we need to give up this incorrect perception of God or we will miss out on Him and all that He wants to do with us and for us.

He is Jehovah. He is God Almighty. He doesn’t have to fit into our scheduled, routine-based services. That’s why we are struggling. We have closed Him out.

Do we want miracles, signs and wonders? Do we want the presence of God when we meet together?

Get rid of the routine. Stop doing the same old stuff over and over again. Draw close to Him and Let God do something NEW! Amen.

Bible Verse of The Day – 3-2-15

Psalm 5:3 (NKJV) 3 My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord; In the morning I will direct it to You, and I will look up.

In these times that we live, distractions are many and seem to be multiplying as each month and year passes by.

There are so many things that pull on us and vie for our time and attention. TV, The internet, social media, electronic gadgets, smartphones, and so much more. Before we know it, our day has passed by us and we’re wondering where it went.

The moment we wake up each day, it’s easy to reach for our devices and begin typing, chatting, listening, watching, etc. And there goes our first few moments of the day, getting caught up in things that occupy our mind and take up our time.

It has become hard to put God first each morning. But that doesn’t mean we should stop trying. A little effort on our part will go a long way toward helping us to get, and keep, our priorities straight each day when we rise.

Throughout God’s word we see examples of God’s people, and even Jesus Himself, getting up early and pulling away into a quiet place, to spend some quiet time communing and talking with God. It’s during those quiet times of solitude that we can hear God the best.

Mark 1:35 (NKJV) 35 Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed.

Some of us have a hard time waking up early. It just takes so much effort to wake up before everyone else in the house. But each and every one of us can do it, if we really try!

Now don’t get us wrong. Our quiet time with God doesn’t have to be first thing in the morning. But that is usually the easiest time for most people to separate themselves from the usual distractions and get alone with Him.

We challenge you today to rise up and set time aside for God each day. It doesn’t have to be a religious ritual, doing the very same thing every time. It can just be some time that we set aside each day to tuck ourselves away in a quiet place and sit, kneel or lay in God’s presence and communicate with Him in an intimate, personal way.

It’s good for us and nourishing to our spirit!

Go ahead. We dare you!

Bible Verse of The Day – 9-1-14

Psalm 119:37 (NKJV) 37 Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things, And revive me in Your way.

To be revived means: to make (someone or something) strong, healthy, or active again.

We need to be revived in the things of God.

We do this by reading, praying and digging deeper into His Word. By drawing closer to God and letting Him touch areas in our lives that we want control over, and give the control to Him.

He will help us turn our eyes from looking at worthless things; the things that keep us distracted, those things that take up all our time and do nothing for us.

He will revive our hearts and make us strong, healthy and active in the things that mean the most to Him; those things that He knows will be good for us.

Be revived!!

Bible Verse of The Day – 4-21-14

Matthew 16:13-16 (NKJV) 13 When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” 14 So they said, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

But who do you say I am?

The way a person answers this question puts them on one side or the other, when it comes to where they stand with God. They either believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the living son of God, Immanuel, or they believe He was just a good man, a teacher or a prophet.

Jesus was all of those things, a prophet, a teacher and a good man, but He was so much more!

Jesus was God with us (Immanuel). He came to the earth with one purpose; to walk with us and then die for us, to save us from our wretched selves and our sinful ways.

Now, let me ask you, who do you say that Jesus is? Is He just someone that we hear about in church, or is He your Savior, your Lord and Redeemer? Do you have a living, vibrant relationship with Him, or is it just casual, where you seek Him or talk to Him once in a while or when things are going wrong with your life?

Kind of makes you think, doesn’t it? Because a vibrant relationship requires work and communication on a regular basis, or it’s not vibrant and living.

Ask yourself today where you’re really at with Jesus. Are you where you want to be? If not, you’re the only one who can change this! You’re the only one who can make a decision to make the relationship better and stronger.

We encourage you to take that step and draw closer to Him today.

Bible Verse of The Day – 12-18-13

Colossians 3:2 (NKJV) Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.

Life can be stressful if we let it.

There are so many things that can cause our minds to be distracted from the things of God. And the more we get distracted, the more our emotions will try to take over and tell us what to do.

As we go through trials it can sometimes be so hard to hear God and know what choices we should be making. We listen and we either hear nothing at all, or we hear so many different things that it can be tough to know what is from God and what is not.

This is why we need to set our minds on things above and stay close to God. The closer we are to Him and the more our minds are focused on His things, the less room there is for the things of the world to get between us.

And the closer we are to Him, the more clearly we can hear Him and discern His voice when we’re going through tough times and need to make hard choices.

James 4:8 (NKJV) Draw near to God and He will draw near to you…

Press in and set your mind on things above.

Bible Verse of The Day – 9-5-13

(1 Corinthians 2:12 NKJV)  Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.

There have been times that God has promised me things and He has brought them in, but I often hear these words right before the breakthrough comes…”Stay close to me.”

Why would God say to stay close to Him, when His word says that when we receive Him as our personal Lord and Savior that His Spirit lives in us? This was a question I would ponder often.

What I have learned over the years is that even though God, through the blood of Jesus, lives in us upon receiving salvation, we still play an important part in working with Him to keep ourselves close.

You see, God’s Spirit is in us, but He doesn’t always have the freedom to lead, guide or give advice. It is up to us to let Him do this.

God gives us a free will and we have to be the ones to remain close to Him. Staying close simply means always listening and watching, staying alert to Him, giving Him the freedom to help at all times, guide at all times and walk us through everyday stuff at all times… not just when we get in trouble or have a bad report. He wants us to be aware of Him at ALL times.

Stay close to God and let Him birth His will in us, bringing it to pass as we walk hand in hand with Him. Oh how glorious it is taking steps with the Omnipresent, Omnipotent Jehovah, the Alpha & Omega!

Bible Verse of The Day – 8-20-13

Psalm 119:133 (NKJV) Direct my steps by Your word, And let no iniquity have dominion over me.

Direct my steps.

This should be the prayer of every believer. These are the words that we should be speaking to God each and every day.

When God is leading us, we will be taking the steps that He wants, not what we want.

As we learn to walk closely to Him, our fleshly wants and desires begin to melt away and His spirit begins to have dominion over us. When this happens, His desires become our desires too.

Following God’s steps for our lives doesn’t mean that everything will be trouble-free. But it does mean that when trouble comes, we will have peace in the midst of the storm and we will know that no matter how hard the wind and the waves beat against us, we will be safe with Him and we will have victory in His timing.

Are things not going well for us right now? Let’s check our steps and make sure they’re being ordered by God, and not just by our own will and desires.
