Bible Verse of The Day – 12-6-19

Isaiah 6:5 (NKJV) 5 So I said: “Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, The Lord of hosts.”

Woe is me!

In the verses leading up to this one, God gave Isaiah a vision. In that vision, he saw God on His throne, along with the angels surrounding Him.

The depth of what Isaiah had seen shook him to His core. He had seen God with His own eyes, and he was “undone”. It completely devastated him.

This is a tough thing for us to imagine or grasp. What did he mean by “undone”?

He realized that he was completely unworthy of being in the presence of God, and that seeing God just might literally cause him to die.

Isaiah became acutely aware of his sinfulness when standing in God’s presence. And he didn’t take it lightly.

But what did Isaiah mean when he said, “woe is me”?

God is pure. There is nothing unclean or unholy about Him. Very few of us can really comprehend this. But, as Isaiah faced God, he comprehended it.

And because he got understanding, he was in fear of dying right there on the spot. In today’s culture, if we were in Isaiah’s situation, we might literally say, “just kill me now”!

As Isaiah later recorded his vision, in verses 6 & 7 he noted that one of the seraphim (angels) flew to him, having a live hot coal that he had taken from the altar, and touched Isaiah’s lips, proclaiming that he was now clean, purged from his sins.

It’s important that we understand the depth of this. God is mighty in more ways than we can ever fully comprehend.

But as we learn of Him and we draw near to Him, we will begin to get a deeper understanding of just who He really is and what that means to us, as mere, frail, sinful human beings.

And when we have an encounter with God, we too might speak the same words as Isaiah. Woe is me. I am undone!
