Proverbs 4:23 (LSB) 23 Guard your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life.

Why does the Word of God so frequently refer to the condition of the human heart?

Our “heart” is the core of who we are. In it we store what is dearest to us.

Is it a physical organ or member of our body?

No. It is metaphoric, symbolic, and intangible.

But it is critically important, and the path of our lives will follow what is in our heart, whether for good or for evil.

How do we know what is in our heart?

We need only to watch our actions and listen to our words. These two things will quickly tell us what resides there.

The sum of those things will show us if our heart inclines toward God-driven values or toward the values of the world.

We cannot hide what is in our heart. It will show itself whether we want it to or not.

And sometimes we will despise what we see there; the words, the thoughts, and the actions.

And we wonder how such things could dwell in us; a child of God.

Sometimes those things may make us fearful.

But fear not. God is merciful, and He is compassionate.

Yes, He is holy. And, no, sin cannot stand in His presence. But know this. He is the God who gives many chances and opportunities for us to repent and straighten our path.

So, how do we fix our heart? What can we do to correct what we find hiding there?

We humble ourselves before Him and submit ourselves to His correction (chastisement & discipline). And we surrender wholly to Him in everything about our lives, one step at a time.

And if we are sincere in doing so, we will experience His loving mercy and compassion as He directs us on the path He has for us. And we will watch in wonder as he purifies our heart, purging it of the iniquities that so often hide there 🙏🏻

  • Bible Verse of The Day – 9-23-25

Revelation 3:19 (NKJV) 19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent.

To be zealous means to be actively and passionately committed to doing what is required regarding that thing that we are zealous about.

In this scripture it is referring to being zealous about drawing near to God and repenting of worldly ways.

God loves us so much, He will chasten us, correct us, and help us to take care of that thing which will destroy us.

And that thing, my friend, is our heart.

Our hearts are deceitful, and desperately wicked, according to Jeremiah.

Jeremiah 17:9 (NKJV) 9 “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?

This is why we need Jesus Christ and what He did on the cross for us all.

He brings salvation to each one that repents of their sin and believes in who He says He is; the Christ, our Messiah, the Son of the living God.

He was crucified and died on the cross, and in 3 days He rose again!

He shed His blood to save us from the wickedness of our hearts; hearts that would lead us right into hell for eternity.

We may say, “well, I’m not that bad. I try to do everything right. I give to the poor, I love people, I follow the golden rules, etc.”

The heart can even cause us to think we are doing alright in God’s eye; it can keep us in a state of negligence.

Why? Because of its pride painting our own beautiful picture of who we are. Our own heart can deceive us.

It will work overtime to avoid asking God for forgiveness. Our very own heart will try and talk us out of what is the best thing that could ever happen to us.

    Bring that heart into check!

Wherever we are today, let us acknowledge the state of our heart, and repent, putting our faith in Christ and asking God for forgiveness.

    Amen.

Proverbs 4:23 (LSB) 23 Guard your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life.

As followers of Christ, it is important for us to understand this foundational truth; the condition of our heart drives everything else about our lives.

From it flows our thoughts, our speech, and our actions.

When we begin our walk with God, we may find ourselves frequently disappointing God with the things we say and do.

This is natural because we are a new believer; still immature in our thinking and understanding.

But as we mature (which we should all do), our heart should change. It should begin to reflect the ways and the values of God.

It is because of this that we should go to great lengths to protect our heart. It requires shielding if we wish to keep and protect it from evil.

As we do this, we will find that we begin to obey God more frequently, and we disappoint Him less with the things we do and speak.

And obedience is the primary thing that God asks of us.

Now, this does not mean that our walk with God is based on works. It simply means that we obey because we love Him.

We are not bound to a set of rules and regulations as the Israelites were.

Jesus came to fulfill the Law and allow us to walk forth in the New Covenant, leaving the Old Covenant behind; completed and no longer necessary.

This was accomplished through the grace of God; His favor upon us.

And by His grace we walk in faith, trusting Him for eternal salvation.

So, let us always give preference to Him, putting Him above all else.

And in doing so, allowing the Holy Spirit to mold and shape our heart that we might not get caught up in rote actions, we will develop genuine obedience that stems from the heart.

  • Bible Verse of The Day – 10-18-14

Luke 6:45 (NKJV) 45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

The heart. It’s where everything that comes out of us emanates from.

Whether we do good or we do evil, it originates from one place; our heart.

So many times we tend to look at people and we try to figure them out. We see someone do something evil and we wonder where it came from. What can make people do those types of things?

We see people do some wonderful, kind and generous things. And we try to figure out what makes them so kind.

It’s all about the heart. Whether it’s evil or good, it comes from the person’s heart.

The best thing we can ever do when we’re praying for someone is to ask God to touch their heart. That’s where everything begins.

It’s also where we need to let God work on us; in our heart.

When our heart is right, everything else is right; our attitude, our thoughts, our motives, our actions.

So when you’re praying, remember to pray for God to touch the heart, whether it’s yours or someone else’s.
