Tag: What the Bible says about building a strong marriage

Bible Verse of The Day – 11-29-19

Genesis 2:24 (NKJV) 24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

Marriage is an incredible thing. A man and a woman are joined together, and they become one.

Yes, this is referring to the physical union that takes place in matrimonial intimacy.

But it’s referring to more than just that.

God intended for a married couple to join together for life. And in that lifelong union, the two grow and mature together as a couple, becoming closer and closer over time.

This is not a cheap shot at those who may have gotten divorced. Divorce is a topic all its own that we won’t get into in this devotional.

We simply want to look at marriage and what God intended it to be; a sacred union between a man and a woman whereby they grow together, under God’s covering, helping each other and nurturing each other and learning to work through whatever difficulties they encounter in life.

Two people becoming one is something that only God can make happen. Why? Because it’s based on more than just feelings, emotions and warm fuzzies.

Yes, being in love helps! But love can come in more ways than just an initial physical attraction based on looks. True love will ultimately carry a couple way beyond physical intimacy and way beyond staring intently into each other’s eyes.

When we do marital counseling, we like to share something with the couple we are counseling that we call the marriage triangle. In your mind, picture a triangle: God is at the head (top) of the triangle. The man and woman are each at a lower corner.

Because they are at the bottom corners, they are not very close. There is space between them.

But, as each of the two people moves closer to God at the top of the triangle, they also move closer to each other. Ultimately, when they both reach God, at the top, they also meet each other there.

Some people might say that this is only a representation of a perfect marriage. In reality, though, it is simply an illustration that shows us how to grow as a couple and keep God at the center of it all.

That is the key; putting and keeping God at the center of everything.

Marriage isn’t always easy. Sometimes it can be downright difficult. None of us is promised a picture-perfect marriage.

But there is one thing we are promised if we put God, and keep God, at the center, and allow Him to be the head of our marriage; that no matter what we face, He will lead us, guide us and bring us through our trials and difficulties, if we let Him.

Will we let Him?

Bible Verse of The Day – 11-29-18

Genesis 2:24 (NKJV) 24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

Aside from the decision to follow Christ, choosing our husband or wife is the most important decision we will make in our lifetime.

When we unite with someone in marriage, we are making a commitment to that person, in the presence of God, to build a lifelong relationship with them. It is not something we should take lightly.

Before the marriage ever takes place, we need to be looking at our relationship in a way that goes beyond the rush of emotions we feel.

The “warm fuzzies” are nice, but they will not carry us through a lifetime of ups and downs. They will not carry us over the hurdles we will face as a husband and wife. They will not help us conquer the challenges that life throws at us.

Movies and books tend to portray love as something that is magical, fairytale-like, with glowing sunsets every evening, and wondrous bliss each morning as we wake up. However, real life is a bit different than that.

Yes, there will be beautiful sunsets observed together as husband and wife. There will be blissful moments that you will both cherish for years and years. There will be much joy over the years.

However, there will be challenges that we face too. Those challenges will require 100% effort on the part of both people if we truly want to overcome them and keep our relationship strong.

Some of life’s challenges will feel like they are bent on destroying our marriage, giving us a feeling of hopelessness if we let them. But we never, ever have to let them!

A marriage built with God as its foundation will be strong, will flourish and last a lifetime. Storms will come, but the relationship will last because we built it on the Rock.

Matthew 7:24-25  (NKJV) 24 “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: 25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.

Bible Verse of The Day – 4-5-18

Ephesians 5:30-33 (NKJV) 30 For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. 31 “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” 32 This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. 33 Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

As members of His body, we are one with Him.

Just as we are one with Him, we are told that a man will leave his mother and father and become one with his bride. The two shall become one flesh.

To the human mind, two people becoming one flesh is very mysterious and hard to understand. But when we begin to look at it through spiritual eyes, and through God’s word, we can see that the relationship between a husband and his wife is symbolic of the relationship between Christ and His bride.

As we draw near to God and learn of Him, we begin to become one with Him on many levels.

As a husband and wife come together, both in physical intimacy and in every other aspect of their lives, they also become one on many levels. With couples who have been together for a very long time, it’s usually very easy to see how united they are as we watch them interact with each other.

It’s truly a miracle and a mystery of God to see, and to live out.

We can personally attest to this in our own marriage. God has truly brought us together and shown us how to become “one flesh” in every area of our relationship.

He has blessed us with a bond that can only be explained by the phrase “one flesh”.

We recently celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary, on March 12. It was a huge milestone for us, not just in our marriage, but in our lives in general, as He has walked us through so much. We were very excited about it!

And despite some of the things we have faced over the years, it was our unity through the bonds that God created that kept us moving forward without so much as a small hiccup in our marriage. And for that, we give God all of the glory and honor.

It’s very fitting that the first verse of Ephesians chapter 5 starts off by telling us to be imitators of God, and the last verse gives us instructions telling husbands and wives to love and respect each other.

And as we become imitators of God, everything about our marriage relationship will become stronger, and our love and respect for each other will grow in ways we could never have imagined. Amen

Bible Verse of The Day – 1-26-18

Ephesians 5:33 (NKJV) 33 Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

Husbands, love your wife. And wife, respect your husband.

Love and respect in any marriage is what keeps that marriage growing strong. Pray for each other, hold each other dear to your hearts, and sacrifice for each other when needed.

As couples, we need to protect our marriage. We need to watch out for our spouse. If our spouse is struggling, we need to make sure we are there for them. Everything else can wait.

Overtime or extra work can wait. The kid’s activities can wait. The meetings can wait. Our social hour with friends can wait. Our sports can wait. Our shopping can wait. Everything else gets put on hold when it comes to our marriage.

When our spouse is struggling, we shouldn’t spend our time nagging at them for the things they are doing wrong. We don’t need to be reminding them of the things they might have done in the past. Leave the past in the past.

They need us to lift them up, encourage them and help them through their tough days. Stand with them and be there for them.

Sometimes we have to humble ourselves and be reminded of our own weaknesses and the struggles that we have, so we can be compassionate towards them during this time.

Love should get stronger when tough times come. Love doesn’t give up. Love sees what may appear to be an ugly situation and helps it to become beautiful, stronger and successful.

Renew our love today for each other by stopping everything. Sit down. Remind each other about our vows and what God says in His word.

Tell each other that we are there for them and will enjoy the good times and walk through the tough times together. And whatever it takes, we will come through and out the other side, for God is with us.

Romans 8:31 (NKJV) 31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

Bible Verse of The Day – 3-12-15

Ephesians 5:25 (NKJV) 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her…

I love my wife.

As a man of God, I’ve learned a lot over the years as to what it means to be a godly husband.

God comes first in everything. And to the world, that might seem a bit twisted, since in the natural way of thinking, they might wonder why my wife doesn’t come first.

But here’s the deal. As we love God more, and we put God first, He will teach us how to love our spouse even more. So the end result of loving God and putting Him first is that we ultimately end up loving our spouse more!

And I will be the first to admit that I still make mistakes. Heck, if I didn’t, it would probably mean that I was already dead and living in a glorified body! Just kidding 🙂

But I can honestly say that God has taught me to love her more as each day goes by.

So, with that said, I’d like to share with everyone that today, March 12, 2015, we are celebrating our 32nd wedding anniversary!

Please help me in celebrating by replying to this message and wishing Pastor Ellie a happy anniversary and letting her know how much she is loved! I want to make the day really special for her 🙂

And she has no idea that I’m doing this, so she will be surprised!

God bless each and every one of you and may He bless your marriage and draw you closer to Himself, in turn, drawing you closer to each other.
