What the Bible says about drawing strength from God

Psalm 34:15 (LSB) 15 The eyes of Yahweh are toward the righteous And His ears are open to their cry for help.

Life in this human skin brings difficulties, trials, and seasons of change that test our faith.

These kinds of things can sometimes cause us to want to throw our hands in the air and give up, walking away from everything thinking that this would somehow solve our problems.

But perseverance is built through those very trials and difficult seasons.

The eyes of God are toward the righteous!

And as children of God, we are made righteous by the blood of Christ.

We are not alone. Nor are we without help.

Because of the righteousness we walk in by the blood of Christ, God’s eye is on us.

And what else?

His ear is open to our cry for help!

It is meant for us to persevere, to stand when we fail like we could faint, and run when we feel as though we can barely walk.

Of course we can’t do this by our own strength. Our flesh is weak. And it will fail if we allow it to dictate to us whether we give up or stand up.

And it is for this reason that we must not live by that flesh, but by the power of the Holy Spirit living in us!

He will hold us up just as Aaron and Hur held up the arms of Moses in the desert (Exodus 17:12), bringing victory to the Israelites.

All we need to do is allow Him to!

We encourage you today to stand in the face of whatever adversity you are facing.

Don’t rely on your own strength. Rely on the strength of God within you!

Psalm 42:5 (NKJV) 5 Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him For the help of His countenance.

Are you fighting discouragement or feeling downcast? Are you exhausted from waiting on God’s hand to move in your situation?

Great men of faith like David and Job felt the same way at times.

That feeling of growing weary or being about to faint is normal, especially if we are carrying a heavy burden for quite some time and not seeing any relief.

Why my soul are you downcast? Why are you depressed?

It’s important that even at times like this we cry out to the Lord and ask Him to renew our strength, help us not grow weary, and not faint.

Isaiah 40:31 (NKJV) 31 But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.

God does not disappoint His children. He will come when we least expect Him.

He knows how much we can take, how long we can wait.

Trust His timing. And let Him renew our strength today!

Philippians 4:13 (LSB) 13 I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.

This is an incredibly popular verse that we hear quoted repeatedly.

But what does it mean?

Is it being accurately used by so many, and in the proper context? Let’s take a look!

First, it is easy to see why this verse is so frequently quoted and used. It is quite encouraging, and it offers us hope and strength.

On the surface, it appears to indicate that as believers we can do anything we set our minds to through Christ, and that He will give us the strength to do so.

But as we examine it, and we view its proper, full context, that idea starts to melt away pretty quickly.

No longer does it seem to carry such a broad meaning.

So, what does it mean?

As the Apostle Paul penned these words, he wasn’t referring to having spiritual superpowers that enabled him to do humanly impossible feats just for the sake of doing them.

Instead, he was discussing learning to live regardless of his financial status and the abundance or lack of abundance of material wealth he had.

Take a look.

As we view verse 12, immediately prior to the verse that is so frequently quoted as a Christian “power verse”, we begin to see what was really meant by verse 13.

Philippians 4:12 (LSB) 12 I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in abundance; in any and all things I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need.

You see, Paul endured immense suffering as an apostle of Christ. He was beaten many times and left for dead at least once.

He was shipwrecked, persecuted, bitten by a venomous snake, spent many years in prison, betrayed by close friends, endured times of extreme poverty and hardship, and more.

But he never backed down. He kept forging ahead despite the obstacles he faced.

How? By the power of Christ in him.

And this is why he penned the words of verse 13, “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me”, to encourage others to do the same; to persevere and endure all things by the power given to us through Christ, to accomplish the things that God has set before us to do.

So, is this verse extremely encouraging? Absolutely!

But now, we have a better understanding of its context and its intended meaning, so we can draw strength from it as we face situations of hardship and trials in our own lives 🙏🏻

Psalm 108:13 (NKJV) 13 Through God we will do valiantly, For it is He who shall tread down our enemies.

It’s through Him, we are given strength to do bold and brave things. It’s through Him we have courage and determination to stand strong in the face of adversity or persecution.

The seasons that come and are hard to swallow will pass. It may shake us up a little and cause us to become tired, but they will pass.

The enemy loves to hit God’s children. He loves to find ways to knock us for a loop. But God is faithful to help us do valiantly what He has called us to do.

God is there for us and will take care of our enemies in due time. We just need to keep standing and staying straight on the path He has called us onto.

We can’t be looking back, or to the right or the left. We must set our face like a flint and look to Him.

Isaiah 50:7 (NKJV) 7 “For the Lord God will help Me; Therefore I will not be disgraced; Therefore I have set My face like a flint, And I know that I will not be ashamed.

We are strong when we allow Him to guide us.
