Bible Verse of The Day – 7-19-23

Psalm 39:4-5 (NKJV) 4 “Lord, make me to know my end, And what is the measure of my days, That I may know how frail I am. 5 Indeed, You have made my days as handbreadths, And my age is as nothing before You; Certainly every man at his best state is but vapor. Selah

Psalm 39 is a great piece of Biblical literature, and we urge everyone to seriously consider reading it through from start to finish several times.

The insights offered by David are a great source of meditation and reflection for all of us.

In the verses above, David reflects on the brevity and frailty of human life.

We are here for much less time than most of us realize, so it’s imperative for us to use those days and years wisely, not squandering them on meaningless pursuits.

David was a mighty warrior, and man with a heart after God.

He was far from perfect, however. He made some poor choices at times, but always repented.

He faced many trials during his life, some of which were life-or-death situations that had him literally running for his life.

He hid in caves. He lived in the wilderness. He spent many years evading capture by his enemies.

And despite being Israel’s king, he realized that his life was no more than a vapor, disappearing quickly.

This taught David to appreciate the years he did have, and to use them to honor God to the best of his ability.

These are good things for us to ponder and reflect on as well.

And as these verses ended, what did David write?

Selah.

This little word was used when the writer wanted to encourage the reader to do more than just skim right on to the next line, but to take to heart what was written, and to meditate on it, gleaning truth and wisdom from it.

Amen

Bible Verse of The Day – 6-12-20

James 4:13-14 (NKJV) 13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; 14 whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.

Have you ever seen a shooting star?

I spend a lot of time on the water during the summer months, and I have gotten to see some incredibly beautiful shooting stars.

No matter how incredibly bright some of them are, they are literally only visible for a split second or two; here and gone almost instantly.

This is a great representation of our lives here on earth. We are here and gone before we even realize it.

Yes, 70 years is a lot longer than the life of a meteor. There’s no doubt about it.

But if we look at our lives compared to the grand scheme of things, those 70 or so years can seem pretty insignificant. And as such, we are no more than a shooting star flashing across the sky for a split second, and then we are gone.

Over my lifetime, there have been a few shooting stars that I have seen that have stood out. They are still very vivid in my memory.

Why? Because they were brighter or more brilliant than others. They left an indelible impression in my mind.

Our goal in our life as a believer should be to leave a lasting impression on the hearts and minds of those around us, shining God’s light to them in the things we do and the things we say, just like those shooting stars that we remember for a lifetime.

Maybe it will be words of encouragement or words of hope. Maybe it will be words of correction, spoken in love. Maybe it will simply be a listening ear that we give to someone who needs to talk.

Maybe it will be time that we took to help someone in need. Maybe it will be something that we gave to someone who was lacking.

Whatever it might be, let it be something that we do or say with the love of God in our hearts. Let our motives be pure. And let God be at the forefront of it all, giving Him the glory for it.

Bible Verse of The Day – 10-25-19

Psalm 37:4 (NKJV) 4 Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

We wrote a devotional recently based on James 4:14 (life is a vapor) and Ecclesiastes 1:14 (all is vanity and grasping for the wind). In it, we asked the question, “what is life?”.

In response, we had a reader write and ask if this contradicts the idea that life is a gift from God. So, we wanted to clarify this to avoid any kind of misunderstanding.

To answer the question directly, life is definitely a gift from God, no matter how we look at it.

But, to make sense of this and divide the gift from the vapor and the grasping for the wind, let’s break it down a bit further.

When we have the gift of life, given to us by God himself, the question comes down to what we do with it. Do we simply live it as though it is our own, with no accountability to our Creator? Or do we give it to Him and let Him direct our paths?

That right there will determine how we see life as a whole.

James spoke of life being like a vapor. A lifespan is short when compared to eternity. We are here and then gone in a very short time, just as a vapor that comes and goes very quickly.

Solomon spoke about how so much of the way we spend our lives is simply grasping for the wind. Life itself is not grasping for the wind. But the way we spend it can be.

Do we delight ourselves in the Lord, as mentioned in the verse above?

This verse in Proverbs sums it all up nicely:

Proverbs 3:6 (NKJV) 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.

You see, if we delight ourselves in Him, and we acknowledge Him in all we do, our lives will never be like grasping for the wind. On the contrary, they will be blessed in so many ways. Psalm 37:4 says He will give us the desires of our heart.

Now that doesn’t sound like grasping for the wind, does it?

It’s all about perspective, and about the choices we make during our ever-so-short lives.

What will we choose? Will we choose to delight ourselves in Him? Will we acknowledge Him in all our ways?

The answers to those two questions will outweigh everything else about our lives.

Bible Verse of The Day – 8-29-18

1 Thessalonians 5:11 Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.

I was sitting in the dentist office one day recently and the dentist was sharing how she had lost her grandfather. He had just left his house and was in an accident. He never returned home.

She said, “I don’t mean to sound morbid, but ever since I learned of what happened to him, I never leave home without saying good bye and I love you, because we just don’t know”.

I have no idea how we even got on that subject. But, I thought about it and realized that it’s the things we go through that impact us the most. Whether good or bad, we can learn something very valuable at times.

Instead of her getting hard, bitter and unforgiving, she chose to take something good from it. She chose to make sure the ones she cares about know she loves them.

This may seem like a very small detail because most of us say goodbye when we are leaving. But, the “I love you” part is what hit me. Many of us just take it for granted that they already know. Or we might even think that that they don’t need to hear it.

Let’s not wait until they are gone and then regret not telling them how we felt about them, how much we appreciate them and care about them. Be sure to take the time and make it known.

It’s those little words and the show of affection that are so comforting and mean so much for both sides.

Bible Verse of The Day – 8-2-18

Isaiah 50:7 (NKJV) 7 “For the Lord God will help Me; Therefore I will not be disgraced; Therefore I have set My face like a flint, And I know that I will not be ashamed.

We can never be sure what each new day will bring.

We get emails every day from people all around the world. My Bible Verse of The Day is far-reaching, praise be to God!

We are still in awe over the places, homes, businesses, ministries, etc. that it reaches. We love to watch God move in the countless lives of those who receive our emails. We are very honored to be able to serve in whatever way that we can.

Today we received a different kind of email. This one was from a woman that we know in a nearby city. We know her because about 7 years ago, she had booked a guided fishing trip for her husband with Pastor Curt. Every year since then he would look forward to that annual trip to catch some bass.

But the email we received today was that he would not be booking another trip because he had passed away on July 10. Instead, she was asking for help with selling her husband’s boat.

She told us that one of the last things he wanted to do before he passed away was to get out on the water again with Pastor Curt. Sadly, he wasn’t able to do so.

You see, we just don’t know from day to day what we will hear or be faced with. No one does. And, as we have said many times before, we never know when our last day will be.

But one thing for sure that we can hold onto is that the Lord God will help us in whatever we may be facing.

It’s important that we set our face like a flint and press into Him. He is our answer, no matter what we face. Set it on Him and move forward. Amen.

Bible Verse of The Day – 1-11-17

James 4:14 (NKJV) 14 whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.

Sometimes it’s the simple things in life that touch the hearts of others.

I was visiting a nursing home a couple of weeks back. I met all kinds of wonderful people. I smiled with them and talked with them. I really enjoyed being around people I didn’t even know. By the time I left I was hugging and kissing them goodbye like they were my own family.

Some of these people were in wheelchairs. Others were able to walk around. Some could not get up at all. Regardless of their condition, I was blessed and honored to be able to spend time with them.

What a joy it was to listen and take it all in.

There was one lady in particular that I had gone to visit. I’ve known her for years. She was always the kindest, nicest lady and she never had a bad word to say about anyone.

How things change. Now she can barely hold a coffee cup in her hand without spilling. She cries for her mother and she can barely remember anything.

I looked at this woman and thought to myself about how well she has done throughout her life. And now it is our time to hold her and help her finish her last days here.

The simple things in life are so beautiful. And spending time with people that are getting older is one of them. We don’t have to have a lot of money or big gifts to bring. Just bring ourselves.

She and all the rest of them gave me a hug as I was getting ready to leave. Even though I didn’t know most of them, I already miss them.

Time goes by quickly. If there is someone we need to love on, we need to go after them and make a way to see them. We don’t know what tomorrow brings.
