Tag: What the Bible says about living righteous lives

Bible Verse of The Day – 4-24-23

1 Peter 2:24 (NKJV) 24 who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness — by whose stripes you were healed.

Most people who know anything at all about Jesus already know that He bore our sins. He paid the price for the sins that we, you and I, committed.

That’s a well-established and well-known fact that most will readily recognize and admit.

What’s not so well known, or so readily admitted, is the fact that because He bore our sins and died in our place, we, having died to sin, might live for righteousness.

You see, it’s easy to accept the fact that Jesus died for us. Knowing and acknowledging that fact doesn’t require any real effort or sacrifice on our part.

Doing something about it is a different story; a reality that screams for action on our part. And some of those actions require great effort and sacrifices on our end.

This is where things can get a bit sticky for some. Where the men and women are separated from the boys and the girls, so to speak.

It’s where our faith and dedication (or lack of them) become obvious. And it is where we often recognize our own shortcomings when it comes to our willingness to deliver on our commitment to our walk with God.

This is not a hopeless situation, though. It doesn’t have to be a permanent problem that derails our faith and condemns us for eternity.

God is the God of compassion, mercy and hope. And He is willing to forgive us if we are willing to turn from our errant ways and repent.

It’s important that we recognize the debt that was paid for each of us by Christ on that cross, and that we live up to the price that was paid that day.

And as we recognize this, it will cause us to want to live our lives righteously for Him.

In turn, this will cause us to want to do the right thing daily, setting ourselves aside and putting Him first in every aspect of our lives, that we may be acceptable to Him in everything.

Romans 12:1 (NKJV) 12 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.

Bible Verse of The Day – 9-7-22

Romans 6:16 (NKJV) 16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?

In keeping with the topic of Monday’s devotional, let’s take a look at some more verses in chapter 6 of Romans.

On Monday we established that God’s grace, and Christ’s redemption set us free from our old selves and the sin that bound us. We also confirmed that His grace toward us is not a license to willfully, habitually sin.

This is not to say or insinuate that we will no longer sin. But that we are no longer slaves to sin. He has empowered us to break free from those things that held us in bondage.

In the verse above, Paul tells us that we are slaves to whatever we present ourselves to.

More plainly stated, we become slaves to whatever we choose to obey.

We can be slaves to sin, or we can be slaves to righteousness.

Additionally, Paul very boldly tells us that being a slave to sin will lead to death. Whereas obeying God leads to righteous living.

Some may try to complicate this, but in reality, it is very simple; obey and have life, or disobey and choose death.

Repeated willful sin will lead us away from God and toward spiritual death (separation from God).

Submission and obedience to God, on the other hand, will lead us to righteous living a closer walk with God, our Creator.

Only we can choose which path we will walk.

Let us choose wisely. Amen.

Bible Verse of The Day – 9-6-22

2 Corinthians 7:1 (NKJV) 1 Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

This is what we do as believers. After we have been saved by the precious blood of Jesus, we do away with a lot of the worldly desire in us.

As we eliminate those things that are filthy in God’s eyes, we began to draw near to Him. And as we get closer to Him, our relationship grows deeper.

We begin to get a taste of what it means to perfect holiness each time we give up or let go of the things that put distance between us and God.

We will never be perfect here on earth, but we will definitely be building and strengthening our relationship with God.

Being clean is very important. We need to work on this on a daily basis, not just one day every once in a while.

We should constantly be open to the Holy Spirit reminding or convicting us of the things that could taint our relationship with God.

How do we know when we are being reminded?

Everyone is different, and the Holy Spirit will let us know in whatever way will get our attention. However, we will definitely know. And at that point we need to make a decision whether to listen or to ignore His promptings.

I was talking to someone one day. They asked me, “why didn’t you stop so and so from doing what they were about to do?”.

I said, “you can talk till you’re blue in the face, and if they don’t hear you, they are basically choosing what they want to do. They will do what they enjoy, or maybe what they are addicted to. You can’t force someone to make the right choice”.

Cleaning ourselves is going to come by making the right choices each day as we hear the voice and heed the promptings of the Holy Spirit.

Pray for His guidance, help and strength. He is faithful!

Isaiah 40:29 (NKJV) 29 He gives power to the weak, And to those who have no might He increases strength.

Bible Verse of The Day – 10-8-21

1 Thessalonians 4:11 (NKJV) 11 that you also aspire to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you,

As Paul addressed the believers at Thessalonica, he urged them to lead quiet lives.

This is good for us to understand, since quiet lives also help us to be at peace, both outwardly and inwardly.

This is not to insinuate that we should stay at home and never interact with others. But to encourage us to avoid conflict whenever possible, and not to purposely inject ourselves into the affairs of others, stirring up trouble and heated discussions or unnecessary debates.

There is a fine line that we need to try to walk. As believers, we are the salt of the earth and the light of the world.

Salt adds flavor, indicating that believers will indeed create some interesting conversations and scenarios as we bring the truth and light into various situations.

This is not to say, however, that we should intentionally try to “stir the pot”, so to speak, to create tense situations.

Notice also that he urged them to “mind their own business”.

This goes hand in hand with living quiet lives. And it’s something that’s good for us to do.

There will be times when we are required to speak truth. And sometimes that truth will cause people to bristle up.

But we need to heed the Holy Spirit as He leads us and lets us know when to speak and when to be silent.

Colossians 3:15 (NKJV) 15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.

Bible Verse of The Day – 8-31-19

Genesis 6:9 (NKJV) 9 This is the genealogy of Noah. Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God.

We want to focus on the word “walked”, and what it means.

A just man, or blameless man, is someone that walks very close to God.

God teaches them to do things with integrity. He teaches them discipline. He teaches them to love unconditionally.

As we endeavor to be a just man or woman, He teaches us to stay away or back away from the things that will defile us. And the most important thing, the thing that will help us to walk with God, is that we listen and take heed when He shows us something.

Walking with God is really about staying clean in our heart, doing the right thing versus doing the wrong.

As we do this, it will help our mind to follow suit.

Our minds can get us into some trouble, as we all know. We can think of some awful things to do and say at times. We have to keep our mind still and in obedience to righteousness. Check it continually with God’s word.

In 2 Peter 2:5, Peter called Noah a preacher of righteousness. Noah’s walk and his love for God showed up through the things he did on a daily basis. He was a good man!

Let us ask God today about our walk with Him. What are people seeing when they see us? Do they see integrity? Do they see a person trying to live righteously? Do we inspire them with His love?

1 John 2:6 (NKJV) 6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.

Bible Verse of The Day – 5-1-18

Romans 12:1 (NKJV) 1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.

Ever wonder what God wants you to do with your life?

Present your body as a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God. There you have it.

This is what He expects from us. It is our reasonable service to Him.

Many people might look at this and think that this is an awful lot to ask of us. But think of it this way; Jesus literally presented His body as a sacrifice, even unto death. So is it really too much for God to require of us that we present our bodies as living sacrifices?

He isn’t asking us to die for Him. He’s simply asking us to live our lives in a holy and righteous way.

And what’s more is that He has given us His word and the Holy Spirit so that we are perfectly equipped to be able to do this. We just need two things; the knowledge that He has asked this of us, and the desire to do it.

Where do we stand? Which side are we choosing? Light, or darkness?

It’s up to us.

1 John 1:6 (NKJV) 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.
