Tag: What the Bible says about the words we speak

Bible Verse of The Day – 3-16-24

Proverbs 18:21 (NKJV) 21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.

What fruit are we eating today?

Whatever it is, it comes from our words.

Life and death, good and bad things, come to our situation by the fruit of our mouth.

What are we speaking today?

What are our words bringing us? Goodness, health and blessings? Or sickness, struggles and death?

Is our fruit made up of backbiting, gossiping, and lying? Or is it made up of kindness, patience, gentleness, and love?

Remember, our tongue has the power to bring life or death.

Beware of what we are saying. It is important, and can bring destruction or blessings.

Some of our struggles come by nothing we have done personally. But some may come because of the way we think, and speak.

We need to be accountable for our words and actions. Let us examine ourselves today. We need to be mindful of what we are saying; the words we speak.

James 3:9-10 (NKJV) 9 With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.

Bible Verse of The Day – 1-23-23

Romans 6:1-2 (NKJV) 1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?

Over the last several years, I have noticed something that I would call a disconnect in the body of Christ; a disconnect between some Christians and what the word of God says about the words we choose to speak.

This is not about whether we speak joyful things or negative things. It’s about certain types of words that I hear people who profess to be Christians using on a repeated basis; cuss words.

For some reason, many Christians fail to understand that God doesn’t want us to be using this kind of language. It is something that we should be leaving behind, as part of our past; our old life before Christ.

This scripture states plainly that we should not be using “filthy language.

Colossians 3:8 (NKJV) 8 But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth.

This next scripture states that we should avoid “coarse jesting”; dirty jokes and similar talk.

Ephesians 5:4 (NKJV) 4 neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.

The problem seems to stem from a failure to allow God to change us completely.

When we give ourselves to Christ, we need to surrender to Him completely, letting Him change us from the inside, out, leaving no area of our lives untouched.

We need to let the Holy Spirit convict us, even in areas where we resist change.

This kind of language is part of the world, not part of the kingdom of God. And God’s word says we are to leave the world behind, separating ourselves form it.

2 Corinthians 6:17 (NKJV) 17 Therefore “Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you.”

We need to allow God to renew our minds, transforming the way we think and the way we act, helping us leave our sinful ways behind.

Romans 12:2 (NKJV) 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

This won’t happen overnight. But as we allow God to convict us, He will bring change to us a little at a time.

We recently released a video on this topic. If you’d like to watch it, please click here to watch it now.

Bible Verse of The Day – 11-15-17

Proverbs 15:1 (NKJV) 1 A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger.

Has anyone ever said or done something to you that just sets you off, and makes you want to lash out at them, tell them what you think and put them in their place?

It’s safe to say that every one of us has been in this kind of situation. And sometimes it makes us feel like blurting out whatever pops into our minds.

Unfortunately, many of us do just that. We lash out with a stinging blast of fiery words. We give it to them good. And then we feel better, right?

Not so much, no. Most times, these verbal lashings will only result in more backlash from the other person. And, in the long run, they usually do more harm than good. And, even worse, we usually feel terrible after doing this.

So, what do we do? How do we handle situations like these?

Believe it or not, soft words, spoken with God’s grace and compassion will almost always be the better option. Soft words are far less apt to stir the pot more. Even better, soft words are more likely to help put out the fire and bring calm to a situation that had become volatile.

Many times, the things that we want to say may have some truth in them. We may see a situation and understand exactly what’s happening. But speaking it bluntly and addressing it head on might not be the way God would want us to handle it at that particular moment in time.

Whereas, speaking words of truth, tempered by the Holy Spirit, can bring a whole new dimension to the situation. Doing this can bring peace in the midst of a storm, so to speak.

This isn’t the case 100% of the time. But, more often than not, speaking with a firm but loving voice will disarm a person who is wound up tight and ready to lash out verbally, or possibly even physically.

Listen for God’s discernment and His leading before speaking our words. Let Him teach us to think before we speak, and to speak with love, even when we’d like to do otherwise.

And watch how God takes tense situations and makes something good out of them.

Bible Verse of The Day – 6-27-17

Proverbs 18:21 (NKJV) 21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.

If we are not careful, we can destroy the words or the seeds that God sows through us into someone’s life. How do we do that? By speaking negatively about it after the fact.

God uses our voice at times to say things to people, to help them in the place that they are in. If it doesn’t turn out the way we hoped it would we may very easily begin to talk about it in a negative way.  By doing so we can destroy that seed before it even has a chance to take root.

That is exactly what the enemy wants.

John 10:10 (NKJV) 10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

How does the enemy bring destruction?

He does it in many ways. Sometimes he will use our very own words and our thoughts toward a situation or a person.

We need to choose our words carefully and not undo what God is doing with negative talk afterwards.

May our talk be with excellence, building and encouraging one another, that we may have victory!

1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NKJV) 11 Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.

Bible Verse of The Day – 11-11-16

Psalm 34:13 (NKJV) 13 Keep your tongue from evil, And your lips from speaking deceit.

Just a little reminder today to watch our words carefully.

How our day is going sometimes determines how hard or easy it can be to keep that tongue tamed.

Of course, when we feel good and all is going well, it makes it a little easier for us. But nevertheless, we need to work on controlling it even in those most difficult times.

What can we do to help ourselves?

We can take time to think things over before we say or do something we regret, or bring harm or hurtful words to any situation. Angry words can cause a lot of problems.

James 1:19 (NKJV) 19 So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;

So today ask God to help us be able to hold our tongue and speak good words, and bring truth with love to those situations in need of it.

Bible Verse of The Day – 7-28-15

Proverbs 18:21 (NKJV) 21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

It’s important that we take our time and think about what we are going to say, before we say it. Our words make a difference. They really matter.

What comes out of our mouth is what is in our heart. If we are constantly saying negative things, fault finding or picking things or people apart, we need to change how we speak.

And if we really want to change how we speak, we really need to let God bring change to our heart.

There is a lot of good to be seen and spoken, but we’ve got to be looking for it. Of course there is bad too, but that is what prayer is for. God will help fix the bad that we find if we bring it to Him and don’t let it dominate our tongue.

Let God help us in our conversations, to say good things, be encouraging, uplifting and fruitful with our words. Amen.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NKJV) 11 Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.
