Bible Verse of The Day – 3-10-20

2 Peter 1:5-6 (NKJV) 5 But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, 6 to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness,

The verses in 2 Peter 1:5-9 are a massive directive for the life of a believer. Yesterday we looked at the first part of verse 5. Today we will finish verse 5 and begin to dig into verse 6 as well.

“Add to your faith” is a seemingly innocuous phrase that doesn’t appear to carry much weight. But let’s look more closely.

The very first implication of this phrase is that, in addition to our faith, we need to add something. So, just having faith alone isn’t enough for us to be effective as a follower of Christ if we wish to bring glory and honor to God.

Bringing glory and honor to God is, after all, why we are here!

It’s also important to note that the Greek word used for “add” was meant to indicate giving lavishly and generously, not simply out of obligation.

Peter listed several different attributes indicative of moral excellence.

So, what is it specifically that we need to add to our faith?

First off, virtue. Let’s check this out more closely.

Virtue, in its most basic form means goodness, righteousness, morality, uprightness, holding a high ethical standard, etc.

But what did its Greek text mean? It literally meant the God-given ability to perform heroic deeds!

Over time, it also came to refer to a high quality of life that makes someone stand out in a way that represents excellence. This is not a haughtiness of attitude, but virtue demonstrated in the way a person carries out their life.

The next addition to our faith is knowledge.

Knowledge is something that God’s word urges us to get more of over and over again.

This is pretty straight forward, referring simply to getting understanding, truth, correct insight, and the proper comprehension and application of God’s word in our lives.

This is why it’s so important that we study and learn His word regularly, not sporadically or haphazardly.

It is nourishment for our spirits, making us strong and potent for the kingdom of God.

Join us tomorrow as we move into verse 6 and examine more of the attributes that Peter tells us about.

Bible Verse of The Day – 3-9-20

2 Peter 1:5 (NKJV) 5 But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge…

Because of the many things that God has blessed us with (grace, mercy, His many promises, and so much more), Peter urges us to “give all diligence” to various things to walk out our faith in Christ.

What does he mean by “giving all diligence”?

It means that we need to make it a priority, putting forth every possible effort to make it happen.

The walking out of our faith in our daily lives can’t be indifferent or halfhearted. It needs to be deliberate, done on purpose, with a heart longing to please God.

Think about it.

If what we do isn’t done in complete sincerity, why do we bother? Why do we even make the effort if it isn’t in our heart to do so?

Some may say, “because we know it’s what we’re supposed to do”.

But if that’s the case, and we know it’s what we’re supposed to do, why do we only do it “just because”?

It’s so very important that we get our hearts right with God and align them with His will and purpose for our lives. Anything less is only lip service, and does nothing to bring honor and glory to the One who breathed life into our lungs and put the very beat in our hearts.

Some may say that this is harsh and legalistic. But what does God’s word say?

Revelation 3:16 (NKJV) 16 So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.

That’s some pretty serious stuff right there! And knowing that God says what He means, it can be a wake-up call for us to start getting serious with Him.

Tomorrow we will take a look at the rest of verse 5, and then move on to verse 6 and 7.

More to come…

Bible Verse of The Day – 3-7-20

Proverbs 14:22 (NKJV) 22 Do they not go astray who devise evil? But mercy and truth belong to those who devise good.

How blessed are we to walk each day in this promise? Both mercy and truth are ours as children of God!

Sometimes we may wonder why we follow Jesus, our Savior. We might wonder why we do what He commands us to do, even on those days when it’s hard and we just want to throw in the towel.

This verse right here says it all; mercy and truth belong to us!

Just so we all know, we are not alone. It’s not easy at times choosing the “GOOD” road or the right thing to do. But it’s well worth every bit of it to have such a wonderful life with Him.

Keep planning to “devise good” and don’t give evil even a fleeting thought. Don’t give it even an inch of leeway, because it will cause us to stray. Keep our face like a flint. Press in, and push forward. God is for us! Amen.

Romans 8:31 (NKJV) 31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

Bible Verse of The Day – 3-6-20

Ephesians 6:12 (NKJV) 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

This is one of the most important things we can learn from all of this talk about battles.

We face an adversary who is not made of flesh and blood. He is a spirit; a demonic, evil spirit. And he uses an army of other evil spirits to further his cause. Their single goal is to destroy us.

1 Peter 5:8 (NKJV) 8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

With that said, it doesn’t mean that some of our battles aren’t the result of natural situations or natural choices or even by decisions we have made.

But it’s important that we know and understand that much of what we fight is invisible to the natural eye and can only be discerned by the Spirit of God dwelling in us.

Either way, though, whether we’re facing a spiritual battle, or we are fighting circumstances that are purely natural, we absolutely need God’s wisdom and guidance to fight in a winning manner.

Some of these battles may be short. Others may be long. Some are very long, lasting months, or possibly even years.

No matter the length or duration, God can use them to shape us and mold us, as we learn and grow through them.

Finally, the most important thing we remember when coming out the other side of a battle is that we give 100% of the honor and glory for each victory, whether small or large, to God Himself.

Even if we don’t necessarily win a battle, there will always be good that comes from them where God deserves glory. So be sure to give that glory to Him, no matter the circumstances.

We hope this mini-series on battles has helped bring some understanding on this topic.

Follow God closely. Let His Spirit lead you. Watch and listen closely for His voice. And know your enemy.

1 Samuel 17:47 (NKJV) 47 Then all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give you into our hands.”

Bible Verse of The Day – 3-5-20

Deuteronomy 31:6 (NKJV) 6 Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.”

Here’s something very important for each and every one of us to understand; We can never have victory, in anything, if we don’t first face a battle.

Without a battle there is no need for victory.

So, for all of the talk we hear in the body of Christ about victory, we had better recognize that if we want victory in anything, we have to fight for it. It’s not a very soothing thought, but it is reality.

Until we understand this, we will flounder and wallow in our battles, struggling to move forward against the attacks we face.

Now, here’s where the best part of all this comes in.

We don’t have to fight any of our battles alone. We have an ally; God Himself!

In the scripture above we are told plainly that God will go with us into our battles. And we are assured that He will never leave us nor forsake us.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that He is going to swoop down from the skies and bail us out every time we face a battle. But He will walk us through it.

He will guide us by the Holy Spirit, who dwells within us. He will give us wisdom and understanding of things we need to understand.

He will tell us when to move and when to stick. He will show us whether to move to the left or to the right. He will even show us the smallest details to help us. We need to be sure to watch and listen, so we don’t miss these things.

So, instead of praying and desperately asking God to take this battle away, we need to be praying, instead, and asking Him to show us how to win it by His spirit!

As we do this, we will slowly gain understanding, moving us further and further forward, toward victory in this battle.

Stick with it. Draw strength from God.

It’s not easy, but He will walk us through it.

More on this topic tomorrow.

Bible Verse of The Day – 3-4-20

Psalm 18:39 (NKJV) 39 For You have armed me with strength for the battle; You have subdued under me those who rose up against me.

Battles.

Almost nobody likes them. They take immense effort and precise strategy if we hope to win. They take hard work. And sometimes they also take losing some things.

Battles hurt. They wound us. They leave scars.

But battles also teach us. A lot.

They teach us about who we are. They teach us where our treasure is. They teach us what we hold dear to our hearts. They force us to see ourselves.

And they test our faith.

Battles change us. They shape us. They alter the path our lives take because we never come out of a battle the same as we went into them.

Battles will often redefine us and the way we think.

Sometimes we win our battles. And yes, sometimes we lose them.

But here’s the important thing to remember about battles. We all face them from time to time.

There’s no escaping it. Battles are a fact of life. Most of you reading this are either facing a battle, in the midst of a battle, or have just come through a battle of some kind in your life.

And if there’s one thing we all have in common, it’s this; all of our battles have given us something that we can now offer to others who are going through their own battles.

It doesn’t matter if we won or lost our battle. We came away from it with insight and knowledge that we didn’t have before.

Battles are a part of life that none of us can avoid, especially if we ever want to move forward in our lives.

Let’s talk more tomorrow about battles. As we begin to get understanding about them, it will help us in many ways.

More to come tomorrow.

Bible Verse of The Day – 3-3-20

Jonah 2:1 (NKJV) 1 Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the fish’s belly.

Have we ever really stopped and pondered on this verse?

I remember in Sunday School as a child, learning about Jonah and coloring in the picture, and the teacher having us do a craft related to the story. But as a grown up, when I think about it, I am completely blown away by it.

Jonah was in the belly of a fish… Alive! If it were me, I would have been scared to death. But what did he do? He prayed!

How many of us pray when we are in trouble? I think we all do. At this point I’d say Jonah was feeling pretty bad about what he had done. Maybe he was wishing he didn’t run, but instead that he had obeyed.

Anything would be better than being in the place he was in at that particular time. He needed something to happen quickly and hugely!

Maybe we feel like we are trapped in an unfamiliar place, and we are scared. Having never been here before, everything looks and feels different. We are completely out of our comfort zone. What do we do?

Pray. Don’t stop praying. Prayer will bring deliverance in one way or another.

Jonah 2:10 (NKJV) 10 So the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

God delivered Jonah out of the fish’s belly, and Jonah did eventually obey God after that.

Obedience may take some of us a little longer than others. And we may actually go through some hard and difficult situations before we get it and do it God’s way.

Our prayers are that, no matter what any of us might be facing, we will all get to where God wants us to be. Amen.

Bible Verse of The Day – 3-2-20

Jeremiah 33:3 (NKJV) 3 ‘Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.’

Jeremiah was in prison. But even in prison, he continued to seek God and hear from Him.

God spoke to Jeremiah in the verse above, urging him to call to Him. He promised that if he would do so, God would show him “great and mighty things”.

The word originally used for “mighty” actually meant “inaccessible” or “unfathomable”.

The things He would show him would be secret, unknown things, previously not spoken to man.

This was an invitation to Jeremiah and the people to see beyond the miraculous things that God had already done in creation, the miracles seen during the exodus from Egypt under the leadership of Moses, and much more.

And He is still speaking these words to us today.

God desires for us to call out to Him, seek Him and draw near to Him.

His willingness to show us “great and mighty” things didn’t go away with the death of Jeremiah or any of the other historic men and women of God.

He is still willing to show us great and mighty things as we walk with Him and grow our relationship with Him.

Most of us would love for this to happen in our lives. The question, though, is whether we are willing to do what it takes to get that close to God.

God uses those, and speaks to those, who are close to Him; those who are willing to make sacrifices in order to put Him first and foremost in their lives.

Jeremiah is a great example of this. He gave up much in order to follow God the way he did. And God used him mightily, having him prophesy and give counsel to Judah and Israel, and even to other nations.

His ministry spanned over 50 years!

So, the question now is, “how close do we want to be to God?”.

Are we willing to do what it takes to get there? Only we can decide.

Jeremiah 29:13 (NKJV) 13 And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.
