Bible Verse of The Day – 8-31-16

Galatians 3:28 (NKJV) 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

In Christ, we are one.

This applies to more than just skin color and ethnicities. This also applies to cultural traditions that contradict the word of God.

The gospel transcends all cultures. It doesn’t matter if it’s African culture, Chinese culture, Japanese culture, Mexican culture, Western culture or any other culture. If a culture has traditions that contradict God’s word, those traditions need to fall and come under submission to God’s word.

Let us give an example of what we’re referring to, so this won’t be misunderstood, misconstrued or twisted in an attempt to try to make it mean something other than what we are really saying.

A reader wrote to us a while back in response to a blog post we had published on “Common Sense Financial Advice”.

She stated that in her African culture, husbands, including pastors, can’t share their income with their wives.

Let us state very bluntly that this is wrong. And we’re not pointing fingers at just this particular cultural tradition. We’re just using this one as an example, for the sake of illustration.

But this is clearly contradictory to God’s word. First, because His word states plainly that there is neither Jew nor Greek in Christ. Labels such as these disappear when we come under the blood of Christ. So the trappings of those labels should also disappear.

Second, the Bible states emphatically that a husband and wife become one flesh. They Are One! So there is no longer “yours and mine”. It’s now “ours”.

Ephesians 5:31 (NKJV) 31 “…a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”

So this tradition of the husband withholding “his” finances from his wife is something that needs to be left behind and forgotten.

And there are, no doubt, many other cultural traditions like this one that fly in the face of freedom in Christ and create bondage for those who follow them.

So let’s take a look at the things we do. Let’s ask ourselves why we do them? Is it simply because it’s the way it’s always been done?

And then let’s truthfully look at whether it lines up with the word of God or not. And if it doesn’t, we need to take whatever steps are necessary to toss it out and leave it behind.

Bible Verse of The Day – 8-30-16

Philippians 2:3-4 (NKJV) 3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.

Selfishness. It’s something that we all wrestle with on one level or another. It’s always easier to think of ourselves than to put others first.

But Jesus was the epitome of being selfless. He put Himself after everyone, to the point of dying for us all. And not only did He die for us, but He died the cruelest of deaths on a Roman cross.

As followers of Christ, we should be emulating Jesus, following in His footsteps. Our lives should be using His life as an example of selflessness. We should make an extra effort to put others first, even when it’s not convenient for us.

Because, let’s face it, putting ourselves first is always easier and more convenient.

And as we follow His example, we will shine His light and show His love to others. This is how we show who God is. This is how hearts and lives are changed, when they see God in us.

Bible Verse of The Day – 8-29-16

Ephesians 4:29 (NKJV) 29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.

This is a good challenge for us each day; Watching our words and what comes out of our mouths.

Depending on what we are caught up in talking about or what we might be going through, sometimes words just want to come flying out of our mouth. It’s natural. We feel like saying something and so we say it.

The worst time to speak is when we are mad, upset or hurt. Maybe we think that by letting out how we feel, and having no restraints on our mouths, that somehow we will feel better on the inside. Wrong!

The flesh loves to scream and yell when it’s mad. It loves to rebel and say things that we shouldn’t be saying simply because it’s mad and angry at everything and everyone.

But here’s the truth in a nutshell; It’s not going to make anything or anyone feel better by speaking corrupt words. If anything, it will add negativity to the mess, the situation will become worse and we will feel awful afterwards.

So what do we do?

Colossians 3:8 (NKJV) 8 But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth.

We need to pull back and choose our words and actions carefully when we are upset, angry, or going through a hard time. Even in those moments we can have control over our words. We can stop in the middle of what we are doing, at any point in time, and do what is right and speak good things… words of edification.

James 1:19 (NKJV) 19 So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;

So when we are feeling like just blurting out whatever we want, because of anger or frustration, we need to be quick to listen to what God’s Spirit is speaking on the inside of us.

We guarantee you that if we truly want to know what God is saying, He is there speaking. We just need to listen and obey.

He will show us how to turn the topic around and say something good, something uplifting and edifying. And it will change the direction of the conversation and the situation for the better.

Bible Verse of The Day – 8-27-16

Matthew 10:34-36 (NKJV) 34 “Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. 35 For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; 36 and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.

Sometimes we may not understand why our very own family doesn’t want anything to do with us at times. They argue or fight with us and have no respect for the decision we have made to serve Christ.

It really isn’t about us as much as it is about Who we have chosen to stand for. We might notice that we sometimes aren’t included in different family celebrations or parties. We may not be invited out to lunch with friends at times. We may even be looked down upon at times for doing absolutely nothing wrong.

God will help us to know how to continue to love others and not let their hurtful words or accusations against us cause us to look at them differently.

The sword that we carry is Christ in us. Sometimes it can cut without us even saying a word. People don’t understand why they feel the conviction they do within their hearts when they are around us, so they will sometimes lash out or run away.

Don’t take it personally. It comes with the decision we make to follow Christ. He will help build our character and show us how to handle each situation.

Luke 6:27 (NKJV) 27 “But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you

Bible Verse of The Day – 8-26-16

Hebrews 4:16 (NKJV) 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Yesterday we spoke about temptation and sin.

Today let’s take a look at God’s grace and mercy for us when we do stumble and sin.

When Jesus died on the cross, the veil of the temple was torn in two. This is one of the most significant things that happened on that day!

Why? Because the veil of the temple was a heavy divider between God and man. Gods spirit dwelt inside, behind that veil. Man couldn’t enter into that area unless he went through a very tough cleansing process.

And even then, some people who entered never made it out alive. Despite their cleansing process, they missed something or had sin in their life that wasn’t accounted for. And because of this, they died when they encountered God’s presence.

When that veil was torn, it meant that we now have open access to God, without fear of reprisal or death, because the blood of Jesus has made us righteous in His sight.

This is a big deal!!

So, now if we sin, we don’t have to worry about God striking us dead. Because His mercy and grace are readily available to us just by approaching Him and asking for them.

If we’ve messed up, we need not shrink back and hide. God has made it possible for us to approach Him boldly and seek His grace and mercy!

So don’t wait! Go to Him! Approach His throne boldly!

Bible Verse of The Day – 8-25-16

1 Corinthians 10:13 (NKJV) 13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

Temptation is something we all deal with. None of us is exempt. We all face temptation and we all make a choice whether to give in to it or not.

The funny thing about temptation is that some people handle it better than others. Some people just seem to give in to it every time they’re faced with it. Others seem to have a really good handle on overcoming it and walking away from it.

Why is that? What’s the difference between the two types of people?

First, we need to understand that sin is a choice. Giving in to temptation is a choice. No, we don’t usually set out with the idea of intentionally sinning. But when push comes to shove, sin is still a choice that we make.

But the key to overcoming temptation is our walk with God. As we grow closer to Him, we will be more likely to make choices that please Him.

And as we do this, as we devour His word and digest it and put it into action, our lives will reflect Him and His word. And our discernment and our strength to overcome sin will grow and multiply!

Then, and only then, will we be able to consistently turn and walk away from the things that tempt us. Because then we will have the strength, the wisdom and the understanding to overcome those things that tempt us.

And as Jesus said to the woman caught in adultery, “Go and sin no more”.

John 8:11 (NKJV) 11 …And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.”

Bible Verse of The Day – 8-24-16

Ephesians 6:4 (NKJV) 4 And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.

God has laid it upon our heart this past week, reminding us that families need our prayers.

Some families have lost the simplicity of spending time together; eating together, laughing together, praying together, talking and spending time just being a family.

It doesn’t matter how many people or parents our family is made up of. We need to be consistent in spending meaningful time with each other. How do we train or bring up our children properly if we do not spend time together?

It’s not hard nowadays to lose sight of the important things like “family time” with all the distractions around us. Things like finances, sports, work, internet, TV, etc., can take up a lot of our time if we’re not careful.

Maybe it’s time to take a good look at where most of our time is spent and rearrange some things. It’s time to get our priorities in order.

Family is our blessing and it’s our responsibility to bring them up correctly! It’s something that we need to keep at the top of our list of priorities, spending time together, training, teaching and loving on them, just as the Lord loves on us.

God, thank you for families today. And please help us to make time for each other. Amen.

Bible Verse of The Day – 8-23-16

Luke 4:18 (NKJV) 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed;

Liberty for the captives. That’s one of the things Jesus proclaimed He came to earth for.

And yet, so many people today are in captivity, bondage to so many things.

Drugs, alcohol, lust, adultery, fornication, pornography, tobacco, bitterness, unforgiveness, envy, strife, demonic spirits and a very long list of other things that could be named are all things that we need to be set free from.

These are the very things that Jesus was talking about; the very things He set people free from when He walked the earth.

And that freedom is still available to us today. We just have to want it and seek it!

So if you’re in captivity to anything, including the things listed above, stop what you’re doing, right now, and reach out for help!

Get free today! Don’t wait any longer. Every day that goes by is another day that you could be living in freedom, not in bondage.

Jesus Christ is able to break the chains that bind you. He is able to set you free, to live the rest of your days as a free man or free woman, not as a slave to the things that bind you and hold you prisoner.

God is waiting. He’s reaching out to you. Turn and run toward Him. Let Him embrace you and set you free today.

Today is the day!

Bible Verse of The Day – 8-22-16

Acts 1:8 (NKJV) 8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Jesus is speaking to the disciples in this verse. They needed power to do what He asked them to do. He’s telling them that they cannot do it on their own, or by intellect. They needed Holy Spirit power; power from on High.

So what makes us think we can do these same kinds of things without the help of the Holy Spirit?

This is why we find ourselves giving up, not completing what we started. We find ourselves tired, beaten down, walked on, overworked, and simply irritated and exhausted.

How will we touch the lives of those who need Christ like this?

Jesus told them they would receive POWER. We also need this power, strength, and guidance of the Holy Spirit.

We, His children, His body, every person, every denomination and every people group need the empowerment of the Holy Spirit to fall on us, so we may do the things God asks us to do.

Cry out to God for the filling of the Holy Spirit today that we too may be full of strength and power to be all that He wants us to be, to do the work that He has called us to do unto the ends of the earth.

Acts 2:4 (NKJV) 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Dear God in Heaven,
We come to You and ask for your filling of the Holy Spirit that you promised us.  Come and fill us and help us walk this walk. We can’t do it on our own and forgive us for trying. Empower us with your Spirit, our Helper. We receive Him today In the name of Jesus Christ.

Let Him fill us today. He is faithful! Amen.
