Bible Verse of The Day – 11-8-22

Psalm 107:8 (NKJV) 8 Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, And for His wonderful works to the children of men!

Today was the first day we started to feel better after being very sick with a virus.

Boy, it sure does remind us how fragile we are when we get hit with something this powerful. It makes you really stop and think about how blessed we are to have a Heavenly Father who cares for us.

Thank God He is with us and helps us to get back on our feet again no matter what we face.

Earlier today I took a ride to get some fresh air. We had been indoors for quite a while.

Nothing is more enjoyable to me than the fresh ocean breeze and the warmth of the sunshine, all of which we can take advantage of if we are careful not to get too busy with our everyday routine and schedules.

Today I sat by the beautiful intracoastal waterway that’s just down the road from our home. I marveled at the power in the seas; how there is so much life going on underneath the water that we can’t see most of the time.

And then there’s all the life on top of the water; sail boats and motor boats floating by, as well as kayaking, paddle boarding, and jet skis.

It just amazes me to know we all have so much beauty at our fingertips to enjoy, even if we live in different areas of the world.

But, are we taking advantage of them? Are we enjoying the blessings of the Lord that are right in front of us, in our home towns?

I hope so. I pray that in the middle of whatever is taking up all our time we would find a nice balance and be able to enjoy these simple little things in life that bring so much joy.

Plan some time out. Make it happen for you and your family. Enjoy the goodness of the Lord and all the beauty He has blessed us with.

Amen.

Bible Verse of The Day – 11-7-22

Hebrews 2:1 (NKJV) 1 Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away.

Some scriptures are much easier to fully comprehend when we understand the point of view or the cultural context from which they were written.

This verse is one of those.

In and of itself, this scripture doesn’t seem to say much. But let’s look at it in a bit more depth to see what we can glean from it. I promise it’ll be worth the effort!

Anytime a verse starts with the word, “therefore”, we know it is referring to something that was said previously.

In this case, the writer is referring to Chapter 1, which spoke of the supremacy of Christ.

We need to keep in mind that the book of Hebrews was written to early Christians, primarily Jews who had converted to Christianity.

Those early Jewish Christians believed that Jesus would return quickly. So, when He didn’t, their faith began to falter.

Thus, the admonition to more earnestly heed the things they had heard (the gospel of Christ), lest they drift away (from their faith).

One of the things that caught my attention in this is the writer’s concern that these believers would “drift away”. The illustration being drawn here is that of a ship drifting past a place of safe anchorage.

When these believers realized that Jesus wasn’t returning anytime soon, they began to wander back toward their Jewish traditions and rituals.

There was a very genuine concern on the writer’s part (verses 2&3) as he expressed fear that those who abandoned their faith would face retribution/punishment for doing so.

This should cause every one of us to also take very seriously our commitment to Christ, paying attention to the warnings issued by Peter (2 Peter 1:10) to “be even more diligent to make your call and election sure”.

Our eternal destiny lies in our own hands. Let us be sure to handle it in a way that’s pleasing to our Lord and that ensures our salvation.

Bible Verse of The Day – 11-5-22

Proverbs 31:26 (NKJV) 26 She opens her mouth with wisdom, And on her tongue is the law of kindness.

She opens her mouth with wisdom. Oh, how I pray God make me like this. May my mouth bring wisdom and on my tongue the law of kindness.

What a way to minister, with wisdom and kindness as our guide!

When people sense kindness they relax. They let down their guard, and most times they will open up and be themselves.

That’s our goal as a child of God, to be able to approach people and have them feel comfortable enough to confide in us. To trust us. To know that we are people of our word, and that we care.

Kindness and wisdom will help us to point them to Christ. And from there they too will find the LOVE that changes their hearts for the good, just like it changed ours.

Ezekiel 36:26 (NKJV) 26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

Bible Verse of The Day – 11-4-22

Matthew 7:24 (NKJV) 24 “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock:

So much of what Jesus taught was simple and straight to the point.

Yes, He also taught some things that were so deep that even His disciples didn’t understand them. But when He spoke, He spoke with absolute authority that assured people that He was who He said He was.

The verse above is one of those that’s direct and to the point!

Despite its simplicity, it speaks volumes that we can all learn from.

Take note of what Jesus said first; “whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them”.

Hearing the things Jesus says isn’t enough. He wants us to do them!

And what did He say about those who actually do them? “I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock”.

So, doing what Jesus says makes us wise! And it gives us a solid foundation to build our lives on.

Then, in verse 25, Jesus said this:

Matthew 7:25 (NKJV) 25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.

You see, rain, floods and winds represent the storms of life. And they are sure to come for each of us. Nobody is exempt.

It doesn’t matter if you are a layperson, a prophet, a pastor, a teacher, a worship leader or anything else with a title. The storms will come for all of us. And most of us will experience many different seasons in our lives where storms of different kinds will pound upon us.

But if we do what Jesus says to do, and not just hear it, we are wise and grounded, anchored on the Rock, giving us a defense that the storms will never be able to overcome or bring down.

And that’s something the world can never offer us.

So, what do we do? We hold fast to Jesus, our Rock and our Redeemer.

Bible Verse of The Day – 11-3-22

Isaiah 55:8 (NKJV) 8 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord.

My thoughts are not your thoughts…

We can’t expect to have the same way of thinking as God. He is beyond our comprehension! He has to teach us through the leading of the Holy Spirit how to walk out this life as His child.

God is mighty! He is an Omnipotent, Omniscient, and Omnipresent God.

He has unlimited power, able to do anything! He is described as Omnipotent and benevolent, meaning His desire is to do good all the time!

He is Omniscient, He knows it all and sees it all. He knows everything about us. He knows our thought before we speak it out as words.

He is omnipresent, present everywhere at the same time, His power being all around us.

His thoughts are not our thoughts and our way is not His way, but we can learn so much about Him when we seek after Him with everything in us, when we read His word and we follow His steps.

We learn, we grow and we become more like Him. We will get to know Him and do things according to His will more than ours.

Don’t be afraid to step out in the things that He is calling us into today. He is with us and will provide the way, the means and the knowhow.

We just need courage to say no to the usual way of doing things and be more open to learn His thoughts and His way. Amen.

Bible Verse of The Day – 11-2-22

Hebrews 11:38 (NLT) 38 They were too good for this world, wandering over deserts and mountains, hiding in caves and holes in the ground.

The more time I spend in God’s word, and the more I learn of God, the more conclusively I can say this; we’ve got it all wrong.

What do I mean by that?

I mean that we spend way too much of our lives here on earth trying to have better lives here on earth. And in doing so, we fail to recognize that our lives are eternal, and that our time is better spent storing up treasures in heaven.

We need to recognize that God’s vision for us is eternal, not temporal. His best life for us is not in the here and now. It is for eternity.

It is in His presence where we will spend eternity, not here on a world made of destructible, natural materials.

Knowing this, wouldn’t it make sense to spend more time and effort working out our salvation with fear and trembling, instead of gathering earthly treasures that moths and rust can destroy?

Wouldn’t it make sense to spend our time seeking out the One who tells us that we will find Him if we seek Him with our whole hearts, instead of seeking the approval of man and the fleeting satisfaction of people on social media that we don’t even know?

In the scripture at the opening of this devotional, the author of Hebrews describes the prophets as being “too good for this world”.

Prior to saying that, he went through a discourse where he listed their various feats of faith, then also listing the brutal ways that many of them had died.

Their lives were not glamorous. They lived for God and paid the price for it. And they did so because of the faith that they had in God’s ability to keep His promise.

So, why should we expect any less for our own lives? Why should we not live our lives in a way that epitomizes unshakable faith in this same God, being willing to shrug off persecution and ridicule for not conforming to the ways of the world?

And why should we spend more time seeking creature comforts than we spend seeking the Maker of those comforts?

Some serious things to ponder on today.

Bible Verse of The Day – 11-1-22

James 1:2-4 (NKJV) 2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

Some people today reading this have taken a big hit. Some have lost their homes, some their jobs and others their family member or loved one.

You are probably feeling lost right now and wondering if it is even worth living any longer. What is there to look forward to?

The fear and loneliness are setting in and you are not sure what to do, say, or where to go from here. How do I even pick up the pieces and move on?

These kinds of hits call for God’s intervention. Prayer is needed, and time away from everything. And sometimes even time away from everyone, so that we can gain some understanding, comfort and guidance as to the changes that we face.

Don’t be ashamed if you don’t know what to do or how to handle such a hit. God knows, and He will guide us and carry us through it if we don’t blame Him for it. He will help us come out on the other side.

With pure joy, through faith and perseverance, we will not be lacking anything! Amen.
