Bible Verse of The Day – 6-29-12

(Prov 10:4 NKJV)  He who has a slack hand becomes poor, But the hand of the diligent makes rich.

Sometimes we expect God to just swoop in and fix all of our problems, bless us with overflowing finances and give us everything we want.

Sadly, there are many teachers these days that are more than happy to prophesy over people about abundant new beginnings for them, promising them that God is going to shower huge blessings over them.

God can and will do this for us, but He will also require something of us. Most of the time what He requires is good, old-fashioned hard work!

God does not want to see His people become slothful and lazy. He wants us to work for what we have. Our diligence in working hard will show Him our intentions and our willingness to obey His word.

If you’re looking for blessings from God today, ask Him what it is that He wants you to do. Sometimes all it takes is for us to show Him we’re serious and take the first step, and then He will take the next one for us.

  1. When Jesus talks about the poor and blessing in Lk. 6:20, he tells his disciples: “Blessed are you poor (disciples), for yours is the kingdom of God.” This is not about working hard for a “blessed” reward, but about giving up wealth for the true blessing, the kingdom of God.

In Lk. 12:32-33 Jesus tells his little flock of disciples their Father wants to give them the kingdom; (since this is a kingdom of love and generosity) he adds that they should sell their treasured possessions and give alms, and they will have a treasure in the heavens.

  2. I understand completely what you’re saying, but God never commanded us to be monetarily poor. Jesus said “Blessed are the poor in spirit”, not “blessed are the financially destitute”.

(Mat 5:3 KJV) Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

This is symbolic of a spirit that’s broken and humble before God. A person can be financially wealthy and still be humble before God.

We need to be very careful not to misunderstand the difference between a “poor spirit” and a poverty-stricken person.

Poverty is a trap and tool of satan to keep people in a position of stress, worry and powerlessness in this world. Any instances of people being told to give everything away are typically a situation where the person treasured their possessions more than their relationship with the Creator.
