2 Timothy 1:14 (NLT) 14 Through the power of the Holy Spirit who lives within us, carefully guard the precious truth that has been entrusted to you.

As Paul wrote to Timothy, he reminded Timothy to “carefully guard the precious truth” that had been entrusted to him.

This phrase is particularly intriguing.

First, it says that Timothy needs to guard something carefully.

Guarding something carefully requires that we be vigilant and alert, which will help us detect anything or anyone who might try to steal or compromise what we’re guarding.

To do that, we must also be aware of who the enemy is and what their devices might be. We would need to understand the various ways that they might try to steal or destroy the thing that we’re protecting.

Second, it infers that what he is urged to guard is precious.

Some words that might describe or define precious would be; valuable, costly, priceless.

In Timothy’s case, the thing Paul was referring to is the gospel of Christ that Timothy had personally embraced.

This same warning holds true for us today. We must fiercely guard what God has put in us through the blood of Christ.

The diligence necessary to do this requires that we allow God to teach us about the enemy of our souls, who roams about like a roaring lion, seeking those he can devour and destroy.

1 Peter 5:8 (NKJV) 8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

In addition to having understanding about our enemy, we need to have the skills to discern his methods of attack. This kind of understanding comes only through the Holy Spirit as we learn the word of God and walk it out in our lives.

The Holy Spirit is faithful to show us things that we would not ordinarily know if we were to rely solely on human understanding. He operates outside of our intellect, allowing us to see and understand things that are critical to us being able to flourish as a child of God.

As Paul did with Timothy, we urge you to “carefully guard the precious truth that has been entrusted to you”, making the necessary effort to grow and mature in your walk with God, that you may be able to spot and defeat the works of the enemy in your life.
