Bible Verse of The Day – 10-1-25

Hebrews 5:14 (LSB) 14 But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern both good and evil.

As we recently wrote, God tells us that we must “test the spirits to see whether they are from God because many false prophets have gone out into the world” (1 John 4:1).

That principle is critical to our spiritual wellbeing.

Testing the spirits can sometimes be straightforward. We compare what people say or do with God’s word and see if they line up with what it says.

Other times, it can be more difficult than this.

Many times, things can be said or done that appear to line up perfectly with God’s word, making them seem genuine and legitimate.

This is where we must “go to the next level”, so to speak.

When something appears to be legitimate, and seems to be speaking truth, we must also discern the spirit behind what is being said or done.

This could be considered “advanced testing” of the spirits.

This is something that cannot be done methodically, as in simply comparing what we see or hear to God’s word. It is done solely by the Holy Spirit, allowing Him to show us what is real and what is not.

The verse at the beginning of this devotional spells it out perfectly, stating that we will learn, through maturity and practice, to discern both good and evil.

This ability is not something we learn overnight. It is not something that just happens.

It comes from a combination of immersing ourselves in God’s word, cleansing ourselves from the ways of the world, and learning to always listen for the voice of God.

This will allow us to learn to see and hear what is behind the words and actions around us.

As we do this, God will begin to open our spiritual eyes and ears, revealing things to us that we would otherwise miss completely.

So, let us not only test the spirits, but also discern them, that we might know who or what is behind the things we see and hear.

Bible Verse of The Day – 5-7-21

Colossians 2:8 (NKJV) 8 Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.

As I read through this and the surrounding verses, one word caught my attention; Beware.

Anytime someone says to beware, we’d better pay attention.

Though this was written by the Apostle Paul many, many centuries ago, it still applies today.

What was Paul telling the Colossians to beware of?

He was telling them to beware of anyone who might try to cheat them (plunder them or take them captive) through philosophy (earthly wisdom, worldly knowledge, empty theories about the meaning of life, etc.) and empty deceit (worthless deception).

There is much of this going around these days. We need to look no further than television, movies, magazines, various websites, radio shows and many other venues to find it in abundance.

These things will attempt to lull us to sleep and sway our faith, moving us away from God and toward carnal, intellect-based ideologies built on humanistic principles instead of the word of God.

It is for this reason that we need to guard our hearts and minds and lean heavily on the Holy Spirit for guidance and discernment.

Proverbs 4:23 (NKJV) 23 Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.

So, as we walk through this earthly life and have to wade through the hordes of “information noise”, let’s be sure to let God help us to keep (guard) our hearts diligently (rigorously, meticulously, carefully, thoroughly) so we’re not caught off guard and robbed by worldly ideologies and empty philosophies.

Bible Verse of The Day – 11-30-15

Galatians 4:9-10 (NKJV) 9 But now after you have known God, or rather are known by God, how is it that you turn again to the weak and beggarly elements, to which you desire again to be in bondage? 10 You observe days and months and seasons and years.

The world will offer us many things that it will claim are Godly or spiritual.

Traditions, rituals, lifestyles and much more will present themselves as subtle substitutes for God’s spirit and God’s presence. Many of them will even claim to draw us closer to God Himself.

Sadly, though, they will ultimately do the opposite. They will pull us away from the one, true God, and down a path that may run somewhat parallel to His path, but is not the same.

As followers of Christ, we need to pay attention to what we celebrate and participate in. Some things are fun and harmless, while other things can have deep roots in pagan rituals and traditions.

Many things are indeed spiritual, but it’s up to us to discern and investigate those things, to make sure we steer clear of things that operate under the wrong spirit.

Colossians 2:8 (NKJV) 8 Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.

As always, let God’s word be the measuring stick to which all things are compared and “sized up”. And if we aren’t able to find that specific something that we’re looking for in the Word, we should always seek seasoned, wise counsel and err on the side of caution.

And, no, we are not alarmists. We’re not claiming that everything around us or everything that we see is evil or detrimental to our spiritual health. But using wisdom and making wise choices is always better than diving in with our eyes closed and wishing later that we had moved a bit more slowly.
