Matthew 12:21 (LSB) 21 And in His name the Gentiles will hope.”
In this verse, and the verses leading up to this one, Jesus was quoting the prophet, Isaiah.
Leading up to this, Jesus had healed a man who had a deformity in his hand. It was on the Sabbath that this took place, and the religious leaders took issue with Jesus for “working” on the Sabbath.
Jesus had withdrawn from the location of this incident. But the crowds had followed Him, so He spoke to them, quoting this well-known prophecy.
The prophecy revolved wholly around the coming Messiah, bringing to light many details about who He would be and how He would carry out His work.
But this last line of what Jesus quoted, above, says it all in one succinct sentence; in His name the nations (Gentiles) will hope.
You see, without Him, we are a hopeless people wandering through life with no purpose and no anchor; boats drifting on the sea with no direction and no stability.
But in Him we find hope, direction, and purpose.
This hope is for the nations; every earth-bound soul born from Adam and Eve until the last day.
There is no hope apart from Him.
In Him there is rest for the weary, peace for the embattled soul, joy for those who mourn, and, most importantly, redemption for the lost.
Matthew 11:29-30 (LSB) 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
