Luke 12:48 (NKJV) 48 But he who did not know, yet committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few. For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.
As Jesus spent time teaching His disciples, He shared many things about the futility of storing up earthly treasures while failing to store up heavenly treasures, stating that a fool “is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”
It was during this time of teaching that He taught them that worrying is useless and accomplishes nothing.
He also gave many examples of servants who were given certain responsibilities by their masters. Some servants were faithful with those responsibilities while others were slack and irresponsible.
And during one part of this, Jesus spoke the words in the verse above.
He wanted the disciples to understand the weight of the understanding they were being given.
He taught them that those who had no understanding could not be expected to meet the standards of those who had received teaching and divine revelation.
However, those who had received much (teaching and understanding) were given a greater responsibility. And were held to higher standards because of this.
This applies to you and me as well.
As children of God, we have received a miraculous, divine gift; the gift of salvation, having our sins washed away by the blood of Christ.
We have been given divine understanding by the Spirit of God, and by His word.
We have been given much!
Therefore, because we have been given much, much is required of us.
We are expected to meet higher standards than those who have not received this gift.
God desires that we take this for what it is; something very precious (valuable), and very serious.
And that we bear the responsibility of it carefully.
How do we do this?
We learn to live and walk by faith, led by the Holy Spirit in all things, that our words and our actions would bring glory and honor to God.
And that when our days on earth end, we would hear Him say, “well done, good and faithful servant”.
Amen
