Tag: What the Bible says about becoming wealthy

Bible Verse of The Day – 7-18-23

1 Timothy 6:17 (NKJV) 17 Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy.

Paul is writing this to Timothy. He is telling him to command (give an authoritative order) to those who are wealthy, to not become haughty.

Another way of saying this is, do not be arrogant, superior-acting, disdainful, showing contempt or lack of respect to others just because of your wealth.

God gives all of us things to enjoy.

But when we start to get confident in those things, or we begin to see ourselves as untouchable, it  can open the door to haughtiness.

Instead of our trust being in God, It can shift to our comfortable lifestyle.

Instead of Who we have, we look at what we have. Instead of trusting with our hearts, we now trust with our head and what we can see and touch.

Having wealth is not a bad thing in and of itself. It’s how we handle it that defines us.

Will we honor God with it?  Or will we lay up for ourselves treasures here on earth?

Matthew 6:19-21 (NKJV) 19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Let us keep our hearts soft and pliable no matter what we have been blessed with.

God is watching our attitudes. He is seeing what we are doing with the riches that He places in our hands.

Amen.

Bible Verse of The Day – 2-18-19

1 Timothy 6:9 (NKJV) 9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition.

Many people desire to be rich… financially blessed. It’s no secret that having an abundance of money makes many aspects of our lives here on earth easier.

But being wealthy also has its down sides. You might ask “how so?”. Wouldn’t having lots of money make everything easier?”

On the surface, it would seem like being wealthy would make a person’s life easier and more pleasant in every aspect, right? Well, yes, it would seem that way. But it’s not always true. Let’s take a look.

First, let’s be sure that we understand that being rich is not a sin. The Bible never, ever states that. But it does teach us that being wealthy comes with a lot of responsibilities.

If we look closely at the verse above, we need to be sure to understand what it really means, not just what we see on the surface.

People whose trust is in God alone usually won’t have as strong a desire to be wealthy as those who are less ethical. Again, it is not a sin to be rich, or to want to be rich. But our desire to know and love God must be above all other desires, including the desire to be wealthy.

If we are corrupt in our ethics, being rich will only cause us to become further corrupt and unethical. And many who start off believing that they are ethically sound, and who seem quite humble, will eventually succumb to the temptations that come with wealth, and their humility will falter if they are not very, very careful.

In the long run, we need to make sure our desires are in their proper order, with God being at the very top, 24/7, 365 days per year. Then and only then can we ever hope to be able to handle financial blessings properly and in a way that doesn’t threaten our walk with God and our eternal destiny.

Bible Verse of The Day – 10-20-15

Proverbs 14:23 (NKJV) 23 In all labor there is profit, but idle chatter leads only to poverty.

During the last 20-30 years, a sense of entitlement has pervaded many societies. People want something for nothing. They don’t want to work for it. They just want it handed to them… dropped into their laps.

Sadly, this has crept into the body of Christ, too. We want God to bless us, just because.

We don’t expect to have to work for anything. We just want someone to lay hands on us, pray for God’s blessings over our lives, and then we sit and wait for it to magically appear.

Many of us have become lazy while we wait. We’ve given up on being diligent with our hands. We disdain labor and continue to sit idle.

And, all the while, we fall deeper and deeper into debt and poverty.

Proverbs 20:13 (NKJV) 13 Do not love sleep, lest you come to poverty; Open your eyes, and you will be satisfied with bread.

The prosperity gospel can be partially to blame for this. It has duped millions and millions of people into believing the lie that God wants us all to be millionaires, without having to do a single thing for it.

But we are partially at fault, too. Sitting back and letting God bless us sounds really good to the flesh!

Proverbs 23:21 (NKJV) 21 For the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and drowsiness will clothe a man with rags.

But God’s word is very clear about this. If we want to eat, be clothed and prosper, we need to work for it!

Then, God will bless the fruits of our labors and prosper us!
