Psalm 22:1-3 (LSB) 22 My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? Far from my salvation are the words of my groaning. 2 O my God, I call by day, but You do not answer; And by night, but I have no rest. 3 Yet You are holy, Enthroned upon the praises of Israel.
David was labeled by God as a man after His own heart.
Yet he was not a perfect man. He had his faults and shortcomings.
But he desired to please God in his life as a whole.
He trusted God.
It was to God that he gave thanks and praise.
It was to God that he looked for understanding and wisdom.
And it was to God he would go when he was in trouble.
He understood taking things to God in prayer.
He understood the importance and power of fasting.
And he knew the pain of feeling like God had forsaken him during times when he needed Him most.
But David never forsook God. He knew that God was faithful. And he knew that without God, he could do nothing.
In fact, without God, he would have been nothing more than a shepherd. It was God’s call and anointing upon his life that made him who he was; king of Israel, and the leader of God’s people.
David didn’t let his position or power go to his head. He did not think more of himself than he should have.
He looked to God as his source of everything.
And it was the words of David in the verse above that Jesus cried out on the cross; “My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?”.
Yet David stayed steadfast in trusting God.
There is much we can learn from David’s example. God is faithful in everything.
Just as David did, that is something we can count on no matter what we face in life.
