Bible Verse of The Day – 11-11-14

1 Kings 19:11-12 (NKJV) 11 Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; 12 and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.

I love the fact that when God passed by Elijah, there was a great wind that came and tore into the mountains, breaking the rocks into pieces, simply by His presence! God is so awesome and powerful.

But at the same time, I love the fact that He speaks to us in a still, small voice. A voice that requires us to have faith, to be still and listen for Him.

If God moved with mighty winds and crashing thunder all the time it would require no faith or effort on our part. Our walk with Him would require nothing more than us looking for the next big crash and then knowing that God was there.

But because He chooses to speak to us quietly, it requires us to pay attention to Him and make a conscious choice to want to hear Him.

Yes, it might seem harder that way, but anything that’s really worth having takes a bit of effort on our part.

Bible Verse of The Day – 7-9-14

(Proverbs 18:10 NKJV) The name of the LORD is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are safe.

We were planning on doing some fishing last night. As we headed out to the lake, we had already checked the weather forecast and it said there was only a 20% chance of rain. That wasn’t enough for us to be concerned about.

After about five minutes of driving we looked up at the sky over the area where we were headed, only to see a huge cloud that was formed in the shape of a giant bear’s head. We were admiring it, thinking how cool that was!

After we realized that it was in the direction we were heading to, we felt prompted to check the forecast again. As we checked the weather forecast, it had changed from the previous 20% chance of rain to an 80% chance, with heavy storms, thunder and lightning! We were disappointed and knew we needed to turn back.

As we turned back and headed home, we couldn’t get over how that cloud looked so much like a bear. We chuckled to each other and thought how neat it was that seeing the cloud shaped like a bear prompted us to check the weather. And by doing so, it saved us from having to drive all the way to the lake, only to get caught in a dangerous storm.

We wondered if that could possibly have been God’s way of protecting us from wasting a lot of time, energy and gas, and also keeping us safe.

Sometimes it’s just as simple as that, paying attention to those little signs may help us stay safe in a big way! Amen.

Bible Verse of The Day – 2-25-14

Proverbs 3:5 (NKJV) Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding;

We touched on this verse about a month ago, but felt like it needed to be reiterated again today.

There are so many things that we face in our lives. So many trials that pull on us and try to keep us down.

It can be pretty tough to make sense of them sometimes. We try and try to wrap our heads around the things that happen, but nothing seems to make sense.

But that’s OK!

God isn’t bound by human understanding and human logic. He doesn’t have to fit in the box that we try to put Him in. Why? Because He’s God!

Our human understanding is limited by what we know and what we understand. But God has no limits.

So when we’re shaking our heads and wondering what’s next, instead of running around frantically, trying to put all of the logical pieces together, we need to let God put the pieces together for us.

That doesn’t come easy most times. We have to fight our emotions and our logical thinking. But once we reach a point where we give up the fight with our minds and let God lead us, putting our trust wholly in Him, then we will have victory.

Stay strong in Him.

Bible Verse of The Day – 2-18-15

Psalm 46:10 (NKJV) Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!

Being still can be a pretty hard thing for us to do. We always want to be on the move, making things happen, changing things and controlling how things go.

Sometimes being on the move can be a good thing. We do, after all, need to get things done. It’s part of being a responsible adult.

But there are times when we need to be still. We need to sit still and be quiet long enough to hear God… to let Him speak to us, instead of us always thinking that He needs to hear us.

We like to say that we’re praying when we talk to God, or that when we talk to God, we’re praying. It’s just how most of us have been taught to think.

But, praying is a two-way conversation! We talk, God listens. God talks, we listen! We get this wrong so many times. We get so caught up in telling God what we need, what we want and how we feel, that we forget to, or get too self-absorbed to let God speak so that we can learn about how He feels.

Ouch. That kind of hurts our ego, doesn’t it? But it’s true!

And if we’re so busy talking that we can’t hear God, isn’t praying kind of pointless?

So, starting today, let’s take the time to listen, not just speak. Give God time to say His piece too, not just listen to your piece.

Bible Verse of The Day

(Revelation 3:22 NKJV)  “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”

The Spirit of God is speaking to the church. His words can be so clear; we just have to take the time to listen.

We need to put aside our agendas, our routines, what we think we have to do to get His attention, and stop long enough to listen. (1 Kings 19:12 NKJV)  and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.

To hear a still small voice, we have to be quiet and listening.

Sometimes in the evening, while we’re sitting in our chairs, we might hear something outside. We both stop what we are doing and sit real still for a moment and listen intently as we try to figure out where that sound came from or what it was. If we kept doing what we were doing we would miss it.

It’s the same with God. Sometimes we just need to stop in our tracks and stay still long enough to know or learn what is going on.

We can get going so fast it’s hard to hit the brakes and slow down, never mind come to a complete stop. But there are times God will call us into a quiet time with Him and we need to be able to pull back and listen.

Each one of us makes up the church, the body of Christ. We need to take His words today and let them penetrate our hearts, giving us wisdom and understanding to help ourselves in our situation.

Bible Verse of The Day – 10-23-13

Proverbs 16:25 (NKJV) There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.

Sometimes, no matter how hard we try, we just can’t understand why God does things the way He does them!

This can be true in happy things and in not-so-happy things.

Here’s the deal. God is so far above us in His ways that our heads just can’t wrap around a large percentage of what He does! But that’s OK, because we are not God. He is.

Now, one thing we need to understand is that we can still walk out what God wants of us. We just need to move by faith and learn to operate by the spirit, not by our flesh or our natural understanding.

This takes some work and lots of practice! Once we begin to get spiritual understanding, we won’t waste our time trying to make sense of what God does or what He asks us to do. We will just accept it, do it and move forward.

Does this sound like blind faith? Well, I guess some people might call it that. But if you have spiritual eyes and ears, and sharp discernment, there’s nothing blind about it at all.

Revelation 2:29 (NKJV) “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”

Bible Verse of The Day – 10-9-13

2 Timothy 4:3-4 (NKJV) 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.

The verses above have a very broad implication, especially with regard to end times teachings.

Today, though, we’re going to look at them on more of a personal level. We’re going to take a look at how they can apply to each and every one of us, either directly, because of behavior in our own lives, or indirectly, due to someone that we know who may be in this boat.

So what does it mean to “heap up teachers for themselves”?

Basically, it means that if we’re having troubles or struggles in our life, instead of seeking out sound counsel, we will look for people who will tell us what we want to hear, either to make us feel better about ourselves, or to try to justify something that we’re doing that we know deep down is wrong.

This doesn’t always mean that we’re doing something immoral or unethical. It just means that we’ve strayed from the path that God has set before us and we’re doing what we need to do to avoid getting back on that path.

Now, if this applies to us, we simply need to own up to it and let God show us where we need to be corrected. But if it’s someone else that we know, let’s be careful not to judge them or throw stones at them!

So let’s not heap up teachers for ourselves. Instead, let’s incline our ear toward God and let Him speak to us and teach us!

Bible Verse of The Day – 6-25-13

1 Kings 19:11 And he said, Go forth, and stand on the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and broke in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake: 12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.

So often we want to hear God’s voice. We wait and we listen. Or at least we think we listen.

But as many times as we want to hear God, how many times are we actually listening for the true voice of God and not what we think is God’s voice?

Probably every single one of us has wished at one time or another that God would speak to us in a booming voice, loud and clear, with instructions for our situation, or an answer to a question that we have. If only it was that easy!

But God wants us to learn to hear Him. He wants us to sharpen our discernment and train our ears to hear His voice.

It takes discipline and work to develop “ears to hear”, but the return is worth the effort.

And don’t make the mistake of thinking that anyone anywhere “has it all figured out”. Nobody does. Even mature believers with great spiritual ears still “miss it” once in a while.

But remember that God is a “rewarder of those who diligently seek Him”, so don’t give up.

Keep pressing in and learning to hear Him. He’s speaking gently.

Bible Verse of The Day – 4-22-13

(Colossians 3:2 NKJV)  Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.

Where are our minds? What do we set them on?

There are a couple of different angles that this could be taught from, but today I we’d like to focus on this aspect;

What occupies our thoughts? Are we spending all of our waking moments wrapped up in earthly matters, or are we giving God the time that He deserves?

As we touched on last week, we can start our day by getting caught up in the cares of our day, or we can wake up and give God our attention before we get busy, setting things in order as soon as we wake up.

But what about after we’re up and about? Are we pushing God aside for the remainder of our day, are we keeping Him in the forefront of our thoughts and the things that we do?

God is everything. He is our source of life. Without Him we are nothing. But with Him we can do all things.

Let’s stop rushing through our days, weeks and years and make an effort to deliberately give God all the time and attention that He is due.

Bible Verse of The Day – 3-20-13

(Numbers 11:23 NKJV)  And the LORD said to Moses, “Has the Lord’s arm been shortened? Now you shall see whether what I say will happen to you or not.”

Are we asking God this same question today? Where are you, God? Has Your arm been shortened?

Have you been in your situation so long that you are beginning to wonder about this?

When we are having good times, of course everything is good. We are confident we are heading down the right road and we are doing the right things.

When trouble comes, and it takes a bit to figure things out…it’s different. It causes us to take a look at ourselves and make changes, if needed. We take the time and ask ourselves are we doing the right things or have we strayed in the wrong direction. Did we make a wrong turn somewhere? What?

This is all good; we should check ourselves. We should be accountable for our actions. If we went off track a bit, God wants us to get back on track. He will be more than happy to help us get back on.

Sometimes we may even feel like He is nowhere around; it seems quiet. At times it can seem so quiet that we think nothing’s happening. We may feel that we have gone too far or done too much wrong to even expect Him to want to help us.

We may even feel He has left us alone to fix things ourselves. That is just not true! That is a lie and we all know where lying voices come from.

No matter how far away we have strayed from the right path, God’s arm has not been shortened. As we repent and truly want to receive His help, His arm will reach down and pick us up right where we are at.

Today, know this; that God’s arm is not too short to reach us.

Bible Verse of The Day – 10-31-12

(1 Ki 19:11-12 NKJV)  Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the LORD.” And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; {12} and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.

A still small voice. How fitting is it that God, who is all-powerful, would choose to speak to us in a still small voice?

But He does! He speaks to us in such subtle ways that we often miss it. Missing it usually means that we make bad decisions or poor choices and these usually cost us on one way or another.

God wants us to learn to hear Him. Why? Because He wants us to put some effort into and learn to operate in FAITH! If God spoke to us with a booming voice or ominous thunder it would require absolutely no faith at all on our part. That’s not how He operates.

Here’s a story about a time when God “spoke to me” at least 3 times in a single day and I missed Him, and it cost me dearly in many ways. Please read through this because there is a lesson to be learned!

Several years ago I was planning a fishing outing with some friends at a local lake. We had done some rough planning ahead of time, but when it came to the day of the event, it just didn’t seem like it was falling into place very easily.

Well, we pushed forward anyway and we all went to the lake for some fishing. We got to the lake and the conditions were terrible. But I ignored it and went fishing anyway.

About 45 minutes into the fishing trip, I had this ominous feeling that I needed to go back to the boat launch and check our vehicles. I ignored it and kept fishing.

A little while later I had a nauseous feeling that I couldn’t explain. I ignored it and kept fishing.

Still, a third time, I had this terrible feeling that I needed to quit fishing and go back to check my vehicle. I ignored it and kept fishing.

After fishing for the number of hours that we had pre-planned, we returned to the boat launch. And we found that all of our vehicles had been broken into, including my brand new truck that had only 1,000 miles on it. Windows were smashed and items had been stolen.

Needless to say, this was costly in terms of money and inconvenience. Had I listened and never gone to the lake to begin with, I would have avoided this. Had I heeded God’s promptings and listened as I was urged to return to the launch to check my vehicle or leave entirely, I would have avoided this.

This was a valuable lesson for me several years ago. I learned from it.

God wants us to hear Him. We just need to learn to hear Him.

He is talking. Are we listening?
