Bible Verse of The Day – 9-21-22

Philippians 4:11-13 (NKJV) 11 Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: 12 I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. 13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

As I was busy doing some things around the house today, the Holy Spirit dropped some things into my spirit to share with all of you. He initially spoke about contentment, and then He began to expand on that, giving me some new insights. So, let’s take a look.

Over the years, Pastor Ellie and I have learned a lot about learning to be content in whatever situation or season God has led us into. This was a hard lesson to learn at the onset, especially when we walked through seasons of financial drought and famine.

Nobody enjoys those types of seasons.

But it was during those very trying seasons where He slowly transformed our minds, through His word and the leading of His Spirit, helping us to better understand what He means by contentment.

As hard as it was in some aspects, it was very easy in other ways. It’s tough to explain fully, but suffice it to say that God showed us ourselves so we could see where we thought we were content, but we were really seeking after things that He didn’t want for us.

A lengthy season of famine is a good teacher!

And the things we learn from those seasons will stay with us for the rest of our lives even though they may be painful to look back at.

Again, nobody enjoys tough seasons, but they are valuable assets to our walk with God if we allow Him to teach us. His wisdom is infinite!

It’s usually down the road a bit, when we look back, that we begin to get understanding as to why God orchestrated things the way He did. And if we don’t get that understanding right away, we will see it later at some point if we allow Him to show us.

For the final point today, take a look at how Paul ended this group of verses; “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”.

At first, this little statement may seem rather disconnected from the words preceding it. But if we look closely, it’s actually a huge nugget of wisdom that he’s sharing.

It is Paul’s faith in Christ that allows him to be content in all situations!

Once our faith in Christ is firmly rooted, our contentment lies in Him, not in our situations or our material possessions.

Bible Verse of The Day – 9-20-22

Isaiah 41:10 (NKJV) 10 Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.

The first sentence in this verse tells us to “fear not”.

Why? Because “I am with you”.

He knows our emotions will cause us to fear at times. It’s a normal reaction.

It’s not always a bad thing to feel fear. It’s all in what we do with it.

How will we handle it?

Will we let it grip us and keep us so we can’t make a move? Or will we take it and act in a way that will allow God to help us handle it?

Have we ever noticed how fear can show us who we are and what we are made of?

For instance, we may be afraid to address someone, or we may be afraid to make a move to do a specific task. Maybe we are afraid to be around a certain crowd, we may feel intimidated by them.

Fear will show us ourselves if we pay attention. It will show us our weakness.

This is going to sound funny, but don’t be afraid when fear approaches.

Reach out to the One who can help.

He is with us; He will strengthen us and help us. He will uphold us with His hand.

If we hide behind fear, we will never get help to move past it.

Praise God today for His righteous right hand! Amen.

Bible Verse of The Day – 9-19-22

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (NKJV) 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

As we each walk through times of difficulties and trials, it’s important to know that we are not alone.

Some of the things we face may be the same things that others are facing.

Some may be unique to us because they are situations that we are facing as individuals, not part of a larger situation.

And even as we walk through difficulties that others are also facing, ours will have its own unique twist because each person’s situation is different.

Regardless of what we’re facing, or the uniqueness of it, God is the same; He is the God of all comfort who walks us through our trials in His own unique ways.

There is none like Him.

And we need to be sure to look at what the last two lines of verse 4 says, because that’s where the rubber meets the road; that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

This means that not only does God comfort us as we walk through trials and difficulties, but He does it with a purpose; so that we may be able to offer that same comfort to others!

Because we have walked through trials, and we have seen the goodness of God in the midst of those trials, we can then take what we learned as He walked us through them, and offer it to others to give them the same comfort we experienced.

So, persevere. Hold fast to Him. And let Him comfort you in the midst of your trial.

Bible Verse of The Day – 9-17-22

Psalm 107:20 (NKJV) 20 He sent His word and healed them, And delivered them from their destructions.

He sent His word and healed them.

There is healing in His word.

What is He saying to us today? What is His healing word for our situation, for our relationship, for our children, grandchildren, for our finances, for our medical condition, etc.? What is His healing word for our country or for this world?

Are our ears open, and are we listening for His word that will bring deliverance from our destruction?

Is it a specific verse standing out to us today, speaking loud and clear? Are we doubting that it could be that simple?

When the centurion went after Jesus and wanted healing for his servant, Jesus did not physically go to heal him. Why?

Because this centurion was a man under authority and had soldiers under him. He knew what it meant to say, “go”, and they would go and do what they were told to do.

He understood the power of words. And he believed that all Jesus needed to do was speak His word.

Matthew 8:8 (NKJV) 8 The centurion answered and said, “Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed.

He told the man, “go your way and as you believe, so let it be done for you”. And the servant was healed!

It took faith on the part of the centurion, believing that Jesus could heal Him even if He didn’t go to the centurion’s home!

Matthew 8:13 (NKJV) 13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go your way; and as you have believed, so let it be done for you.” And his servant was healed that same hour.

How much faith do we have? Can we be like the centurion today and believe Jesus’s word over our situation? Do we believe that He can and will bring healing and or deliverance through His word?

Bible Verse of The Day – 9-16-22

1 Corinthians 6:12 (NKJV) 12 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.

This is such a powerful verse that we can all learn a lot from.

Let’s take a look to see what it means for us as followers of Christ.

All things are lawful for me.

First, we need to know that this verse can be a bit confusing if we look at it only on the surface. So, let’s look below the surface.

It’s important to understand that Paul is addressing the Corinthian believers regarding various shortcomings within this group that had been brought to his attention.

They mistakenly believed that, because they were no longer bound to the Mosaic Law, they were free to do whatever pleased them.

In the verses surrounding verse 12, Paul is instructing them that this isn’t the case, and that what they subject themselves to may well be what they end up bound (enslaved) to.

Paul warns them that although “all things may be lawful”, they may not be helpful (beneficial or profitable).

“All things are lawful for me” was a saying that the Corinthians had coined to justify their immoral habits and behaviors.

Paul quotes this phrase as he addresses them, knowing that using their own phrases will catch their attention.

Additionally, he tells them that he “will not be brought under the power of any” (anything).

What’s he really saying?

He’s saying that the only power he will subject himself to is the power of the Holy Spirit.

His insinuation is that by subjecting himself to the power and leading of the Holy Spirit, he will not fall subject to (slave to) the power of sin.

So, let us remember that although Jesus died for our sins, offering us forgiveness, and although God shows us His mercy and grace, we should not entangle ourselves in, or subject ourselves to, those things that will ultimately enslave us.

Bible Verse of the Day – 9-15-22

Ephesians 2:13 (NKJV) 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

I turned 60 back in early July. I have to admit that it feels odd to say that. But it’s reality, and it has caused me to do a lot of reflecting since then, especially about the brevity of life itself.

One of the things that came to me is how lost I was when I was young.

As a child and a teenager, I knew very little of Christ. I vaguely understood that He was the son of God. But my knowledge didn’t go very far beyond that.

As I reached my late teens, I lived as I pleased. In the worldly sense, I was free and happy.

But in the eyes of God, I was lost. I was alone.

Now, in Christ Jesus, I have been brought near by His blood.

God is not a far-off God. He takes no delight in being far away from any of us. He longs to be near to us. In fact, His word tells us that if we draw near to Him, He will draw near to us.

James 4:8 (NKJV) 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you…

And God urges us to seek Him with our whole heart.

Jeremiah 29:13 (NKJV) 13 And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.

There is no reason for a single one of us to spend our lives living like God is far off, oblivious to our existence.

God offers us so much; love, mercy, grace, compassion, forgiveness and eternal life with Him.

But why do so many feel alone? Because we fail to put the time and energy that’s necessary into seeking Him and drawing near to Him.

We may feel dirty and unworthy. And, in a sense, we are.

But that’s the beauty of God. He takes people that are dirty and broken and makes them new, by the blood of Christ.

His mercies are incredible. They are new every day; fresh and full. And He gives freely of them to all who seek Him and ask.

Lamentations 3:22-23 (NKJV) 22 Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.

Don’t stand afar off. Don’t keep God at arm’s length any longer.

Seek Him with your whole heart. Draw near to Him and He will draw near to you.

Bible Verse of The Day – 9-14-22

Acts 11:16 (NKJV) 16 Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how He said, ‘John indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’

After we repent, accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, and are baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of our sins, we will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

For this is the promise to us, and to all that the Lord our God will call.

Acts 2:38 (NKJV) 38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirt is our gift. He bears witness to the reality of the exaltation of Jesus and is given to those who believe, have faith and obey Him.

The most important thing we can learn is to surrender to Him.

There will be times when our flesh does not understand fully what the Holy Spirit may be impressing on us to do. It’s in those moments that we need to trust Him and not try to follow our intellect.

Why? Because our intellect doesn’t understand the things of the Spirit.

The Holy Spirit will always line up with God’s word. He will never have us do something that goes against the Word of God.

Walking in the gift of the Holy Spirit will enable us to pray in tongues, as the Spirit gives utterance and as we open our mouth by faith and let it come out.

Acts 2:4 (NKJV) 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Step out in faith. Obey the Holy Spirit. And as we do this, He will become more active in our lives.

Amen.

Bible Verse of The Day – 9-13-22

1 Corinthians 3:4 (NKJV) 4 For when one says, “I am of Paul,” and another, “I am of Apollos,” are you not carnal?

Yesterday, we talked about factions and two reasons why factions exist within the body of Christ.

Today, let’s look at a third reason.

  1. False teachings.

False teachings can bring great division within the body of Christ.

Sometimes this is due to intentional actions that were created and taken solely to create division. Other times, it is due more to people breaking away from the truth to follow these false teachings, resulting in them separating from those who stick more closely to the truth of God’s word.

Between yesterday and today, these are only 3 examples. And within these 3 examples there are dozens (or possibly even hundreds) of ways to break them down more precisely.

The list of things that divides the church is endless. And much of it is petty indeed.

But don’t make the mistake of thinking that this is something new. It’s not. It’s been happening since the days when Jesus walked among men.

How do we fix this?

It’s simple, but yet very complicated. That’s just the way of human beings.

The simplicity lies in God’s word, and in us being dedicated enough to study it and learn it without prejudice. In other words, we need to be willing to read and study it honestly, so that God can show us His truth, without influence from unholy or inaccurate sources.

The complicated part comes when we have to lay aside our own (mostly pre-conceived) opinions and acknowledge that our own belief may be wrong.

Because the body of Christ is made up of (mostly fickle) humans, we will never get it 100% right.

But it would behoove us to pay close attention to the Holy Spirit as He leads and guides us, so that we can see and hear truth for what it is.

And then, if we are shown that what we believed to be true is off, even a little, we need to humble ourselves enough to allow God to change or adjust that belief.

If we refuse to allow God to change our minds, we are not offending people, but God Himself, with our pride and stubbornness.

Let us not be as the Israelites were, a stiff-necked people who ignored God’s leading and spent 40 years wandering in the wilderness on what should have been a 12-day journey.

Exodus 32:9 (NKJV) 9 And the Lord said to Moses, “I have seen this people, and indeed it is a stiff-necked people!

Bible Verse of The Day – 9-12-22

1 Corinthians 1:11-13 (NKJV) 11 For it has been declared to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of Chloe’s household, that there are contentions among you. 12 Now I say this, that each of you says, “I am of Paul,” or “I am of Apollos,” or “I am of Cephas,” or “I am of Christ.” 13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?

These verses bring to mind one word; factions.

Factions is defined as small, organized dissenting groups within a larger group.

Factions within the church are not of God. They are not Biblical, and they are not Christlike.

To be clear, factions are not the cause of the division. Division causes the creation of factions.

The church is full of factions that are thriving.

You may ask, “how so?”.

Let’s take a look at just a few of the things that cause division, leading to various factions within the body of Christ.

  1. Denominations.

Denominations are not Biblical or of God. They are manmade.

Denominations divide the body of Christ based on differences in overall interpretations of scripture, or because of differences in beliefs that sum up their opinions on what scripture says.

Some of these are minor. Others are very major. We will not cover the actual differences here, but suffice it to say that this is a very big deal.

  1. Personal opinions or preferences.

Personal opinions or preferences can cause great divisions between individual members of the body of Christ. And those divisions can spill over into localized bodies of believers, creating a larger overall divide.

Let’s talk more about factions tomorrow, and we will wrap this up then.
