John 8:10-11 (NKJV) 10 When Jesus had raised Himself up and saw no one but the woman, He said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.”
Over the last two days, we have discussed who Jesus is, to all of humanity and to us personally.
Today we will address one last question. The answers to this question will help shape our understanding in ways that we may not have previously thought about.
The question we want to examine today is, “who are you to Jesus?”
It is critical for us to understand this because it shapes our entire walk with God.
Considering that fact, who we are to Jesus, how does He see us?
The verses above help us establish the fact that Jesus sees us through eyes of compassion and mercy.
The woman in the verses above was caught in the act of adultery and had been dragged into the streets to be stoned to death, as was required in the Mosaic Law.
But when Jesus saw what was happening, He intervened and caused the woman’s accusers to stop and consider what they were about to do by addressing their own sinfulness.
By doing this, Jesus caused each of the men who were holding stones in their hands to look introspectively. And by the time He was finished, every last man had left, dropping their stones right there in the street.
When the last man had walked away, Jesus did not condemn the woman, who was clearly guilty of what she had been accused of.
Instead, He told her to go on her way, with a reminder that she should no longer engage in her sins.
This is how Jesus sees us.
He came and walked the earth in human form so He could experience life up close and personal, being tempted, experiencing betrayal, feeling hunger, sorrow, fear, and joy.
He did not carry a big stick with which He could punish. He did not swing a sword against His enemies, of which He had many.
He chose to love in a way that was foreign to those He encountered. And that love transformed the hearts and lives of many, including 12 apostles who would go on to turn the world upside down in His name.
So, we urge you to submit yourself to Him. Let Him love you with the love that can only come from the heart of God.
And in turn, love Him back with your whole being, making your life a sacrifice to the One who was willing to die in our place on the most horrific cross of Calvary.
